Median Study Scores a bad indicator of top schools?
« on: December 15, 2010, 10:58:13 pm »
Hi guys,
Was just thinking and:

Since they use RAW study scores to calculate the median study score of a school, wouldn't it be a disadvantage to schools who have many students taking high scaling subjects such a specialist math and latin and a huge advantage to schools who have many students taking subjects at the other end such as further?

Though I agree that median ATAR scores are a good indicator of a school's cohort performance in that year, wouldn't it be more accurate to calculate median study scores using scaled study scores?

Do you guys agree? :S
2011: ATAR 99.50

These are all averages. I assure you that no school is disadvantaged for offering Latin. A strong school performs well regardless of the subjects it offers.

I say they should just use the median ATARs.

Generally median ATAR is agreed to be the most accurate decider ?

So can we thus say that Mac.Rob topped with a median of 96.75?

Easily
do the rankings go by study scores or by atars? :/

There are two lists, ATAR is the better indicator I think.

ahhh right. :D
In the study scores list, do they include study scores from younger year levels? (eg year 11/year 10's who did a 3/4)

Haha I guess the general consensus is that median ATARs are best for determining ranks and what not.

we can't expect other non selective school , even private schoools, to compare with MHS and MAcrob, simply because they select all their students based on academic merit, whereas other schools have a wider demographic of students. That is why i don't think MHS and Macrob can be added to the rankings since it is obvious they are always going to win.

Median ATARs are good, but there is a slight problem with schools where many of the year 11s do a 3/4 subject and then proceed to score highly. However if it is better that the year 11s' achievements are shown in their ATARs in year 12 (in calculation of the median ATAR), then that problem is not a problem

Yes Median ATARs are far better than median study scores! median study scores are completely inaccurate and disadvantage schools that do well in maths, sciences and languages - the very subjects which VCE scaling favours! still - no way you judge it is going to be wholly fair!
Just back from spending the year at Oxford. Now onto final year Monash MBBS.

I'd like to see a list of ATAR rankings after IB results come out...my school's results appear to be getting worse each year, but it's just that more high-achieving kids are choosing to do IB and less are doing VCE, and ~50% last year got an ATAR over 99, compared to ~10% from VCE.
