VCE 2011 Tutoring - Literature [50]
« on: December 17, 2010, 05:24:38 pm »
Hey everyone, this is an ad for one of my really good friends who got DUX of my school this year. She's an absolute genius and helped me throughout the year tremendously. You'd be silly to not consider her as a tutor because you'd be passing up the opportunity to learn from one of the top fourteen students in lit who got a perfect score! Just from reading her essays this year I'd always be in awe of them and her control of language. I can only imagine how good it'd be to have her as a regular tutor! She's one of the most committed people too, I can assure you she'll do whatever she can to make sure her students end up with the highest scores possible.

Please contact the email provided in the ad instead of PMing me cos I'm only posting the ad cos she doesn't have a VN account. You can PM her if you prefer now, her profile can be found at: http://vce.atarnotes.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=24092 :)

Hi,
My name is Selina and I'm offering tutoring services for VCE Literature students :) The subjects I completed for my VCE were:

Literature [50]
English [44]
Business Management [49]  Completed in 2009
Media [46]
Philosophy [41]
Maths Methods [34]
I also received a score of 50 for written communication section in the 2010 GAT

This got me an ENTER/ATAR of 99.4 and also the Dux of my school.
I'm particularly interested in tutoring Literature students, as Literature was my favourite subject by far!
The texts that I studied in year 12 include: Hamlet (Shakespeare), A Passage to India (E.M Forster), This Boy's Life (Tobias Wolff), My Brother Jack (George Johnston), Ethan Frome (Edith Wharton).
NOTE: texts in red are those that I'm prepared to teach for the end of year examination.

Although I'm willing to read other material for SACs (I'm more than happy to assist students with their different texts prior to the final exam), I will not be reading/teaching different exam material. This is not because I can't be bothered reading more novels/plays/poetry haha
This condition is purely based on the fact that I'll be at university next year and probably won't have time to analyse new texts to the degree that I have for Hamlet and A Passage to India.
Read Selina's post below! She's now willing to look at different texts although she'll need people's lists ASAP to see which ones she needs to analyse. So get in quick as she's only able to do this over the summer holidays when she has enough time to study the other texts in depth.

I believe that if I'm to tutor, I should have an extremely comprehensive knowledge of the texts that I'm teaching in order to provide students with insightful interpretations that have perhaps not been covered in the classroom. I can only guarantee such a service for the aforementioned exam texts.
I've analysed every single page of Hamlet and A Passage to India. Each page includes the identification of literary techniques and links to the text as a whole which I'm sure would be very beneficial for students! Of course, I will be keeping my copies but students are more than welcome to take notes! I can also help with one of the most confusing concepts in VCE Literature - how do I begin/structure my passage analysis for the exam?
Although it's easy to create practice exams for Lit, it's a very tedious process so I'll also type up passages for my students (new ones to be given out every session) to relieve them of a time consuming task.
If you want to check my VCE results for legitimacy they're in the Herald Sun "Top Scorers Guide" (my business management score won't be in there because I ticked the box that prohibited the publishing of my scores in 09). You can also email me on [email protected] and I'll send you copies of the appropriate VTAC documentation.
I live on the Mornington Peninsula, however, I'm either going to Monash or Melbourne University next year so arrangements in the city can be made.
I will be charging $25 per hour (may be higher if I have to travel more or due to petrol costs)... if you only want to have one session as an introduction to Hamlet/A Passage to India then that's fine! You're under no obligation to continue tutoring sessions :)

ALSO: if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask!

I have known Selina for a while now and I can honestly say she is the most kind hearted, friendly girl you will ever meet. But in terms of her tutoring capabilities, as you can tell by her score, she has worked very hard and knows the course back to front, meaning that you know that the feedback that you will gain from her will be of an exceptional quality; in fact, there have been numerous occasions in which the Head of Literature at our school has used her pieces as an example of a 20/20 standard to demonstrate her deep understanding of the subject.

As for her understanding of the books that she studied in year 12, I can honestly say I've never seen something so deeply analysed in my life, her notes have an immeasurable value to your understanding and overall success in the subject.

I have no doubt that she would be an amazing tutor to anyone that requests her services, and I can assure you that you will be in very goods hands with her.

Hey 2011 litters,

I've had a few inquiries from students studying Hamlet and A Passage to India.
I was wondering if there are any other students interested who are studying alternative texts...if I notice a popular text emerging from the responses then I may be willing to offer tutoring for it  8-) I don't want to exclude students who need assistance just because they're studying different things.

So just PM or email me with your texts and hopefully I'll be helping you soon! :)

Thanks,

Selina.
