Saying things out loud is better than handwriting (which is better than typing, whch is better than nothing). But a photographic memory would help (wish I had one!)

Yup, I agree.

I made flashcards of all my dates and historian's quotes for Revs last year (there were probably around 150 of them all up) and just recited them out loud. Pacing helped, too, when I did this.

Yeah, saying a quote maybe three times out loud was enough for me to memorise the entire thing. Best technique to rote learn - ever. :D

+ can be done on the train! (unlike saying it -which would make everyone think you were crazy...)

I was referring to the rote learning part of the quote (should have bolded it...), assuming you meant the repetitive writing aspect of rote learning ;)

Oh haha yeah yup sure. :)

I personally find handwriting it takes too long and gets boring too quickly.
A good way is to (using your flash cards/notes) get a friend to quiz you. Eliminate the ones you know confidently until you know all of them confidently. :D

Along the medidation theory, I always found it best that after doing a block of study to do nothing for a few minutes. This allowed your brain to not get stimulated again too quickly and lose information that you just learned or went over. It seems different but it allowed yourself to feel as if your brain has 'absorbed' the information and that it has not been lost by doing something straight after such as turning on your tv could make your brain become stimulated and lose focus on what you just learnt.

The one thing I learnt from TSFX - this technique really works!

^ What about hand-writing and saying it aloud, this is good too. Write it and slowly say it aloud, and then say it aloud again after, thinking about nothing else but what you are trying to memorise, then visualise mentally writing it in your head while saying o-o

Yup Listening to yourself say it and then saying it right after you hear yourself say it (called 'shadowing') is maybe the best xD And even better do it while reading the text. I think this wins?

“We are all alone, born alone, die alone, we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely -- at least, not all the time -- but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.”

Rote learning on a computer. I was told that this method wouldn't work, however it did the trick for me, further highlighting the fact that there are no generic tips for remembering things; it's whatever suits you.

About Philosophy

When I see a youth thus engaged,—the study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle
