I've been to it. The main one started yesterday and finished today. Though the repeat one is still on. Basically, you have 3 lecturers talking about the 3 different types of essay; Text, Context and Language Analysis. The lectures are not really text-specific as such, but the notes give examples of the different essays and so on (depending on your context area). You get 3 booklets. It's decent, I guess. It's more general advice/tips on how to improve on each essay. Just go if you really want to know if it's worth it. Everyone has a different take on these lectures.

I think it's a bit of both, really. Most of the lecturers talked about "formulaic" ways to tackle each essay and gave general advice. They did go through the course as well. I just went for notes really. For the most part, what the lecturers said was really straight out from the notes. It was on the rare occasion, that what they said, wasn't from the notes. Go to the lectures for yourself - my view of it, may be entirely different to yours. If anything go to shinny, his notes are much more condensed. They're if not better than what I got from TSFX.

hmm. i havent been to any tsfx lectures, but the it does seem a bit pricey.
ive got some of their notes which are good, however they go into too much detail sometimes...
id say your better off spending that money on other stuff like tuition.
shinny's program thing is awesome!! :D

Save your money and spend it on private tuition instead.. if you really want to get a taste of TSFX, I suggest you go to their free lectures.. because frankly, this is as much as you'd want to spend for thei lectures.

I went to the English that were on for the last 2 days. The notes provided an overview of what you're expected to do and they copied some of the essays from the vcaa examiners report. As someone mentioned before, they don't go specifically into any of the texts so it could be a waste if you're after exploration of ideas

As for the 3 lecturers, they were good communicaters and were quite honest. One of the lecturers, Andrea Hayes, writes the English checkpoints. So sometimes she would refer to the checkpoints notes she wrote.

I only went to the lecture to get a taste of the opinions of different English teachers from other schools and to expose myself to their teaching. For me, it's been a long time since I've had a good English teacher. Overall I think the lecture was great and it definitely got me more motivated.

i guess it really depends then. after shinnys program im "a bit" more confident in english......and it sound from all those who went that the tsfx lectures were just overviews of the course, which is wat shinny did......

I think you'd be better off going to text-specific lectures or tutoring that focuses on your texts. You can find essay examples from many places, so unless you really want a good understanding of the vce english course, I think you'd be better off not going tsfx

I think they (TSFX) make students sign up for 2 or 3 subjects, to attend their "free lecture", which isn't in fact "free" at all. Though, I agree with what has been said - the lectures aren't "text-specific" and are not tailored to everyone's needs, considering the broad range of students attending their lectures and obviously, not everyone there studies the same texts. They can only do so much. As I said, it's more general advice. I'm not saying you should or shouldn't go to their lectures. It's up to you.

@azngirl456, where were you sitting in the lecture theatre? :p

The last guy doing the Context section was so boring, I thought. Though, the lecturer who went through Language Analysis was quite humourous.

my english tutor who i started going to was a presenter at the lectures last year and she said the material and stuff was absolute crap and not worth it.
In my opinion, if you feel you may be able to learn something, then go for it, nothing better than crossing out that doubt in the back of your head

I moved seats during the breaks...but I was mainly sitting in the middle section of the lecture theatre.

Yeh I think everyone liked the guy who did the language analysis section. The last guy wasn't that bad. He just demanded respect from time to time, but I think he had a good grasp on the contexts
