Definitely not.

Studying in the holidays is to expose yourself to the content and give yourself an inclination the level of personal difficulty that subject poses to you during the year. If you're not naturally good at, say Chemistry, then try and understand the concepts covered in Unit 1/2 before you try and learn the concepts covered in 3/4. Of course, that isn't to say that everything in 1/2 Chem is relevant but much of it is.

I wouldn't get too strung up over doing too much work in the holidays so you can be ahead of the class in all your subjects. Rather, just read through the material you will cover, make sure you concentrate really hard in class, ask your teacher questions after class on concepts you don't understand, discipline yourself to do set work each night and study up for a bit as well. Don't forget to relax on the weekends.

Exactly like EZ said, work efficiently and allocate your efforts into things that'll give you the most benefit. It won't be efficient to mindlessly go through every single question in your Methods textbook all in one sitting. It will be efficient, however, to just choose several of the questions that cover the ideas nicely and leave some for later in the term or such as revision.

No. However, if you are unable to finish it then it doesn't bode well as an indication of your motivation during the year ahead.

I think it is there to give you a heads up on the year ahead.
If you do it and understand it well you should be a little bit ahead of your peers (do not get too far ahead, otherwise you will might be doing work you don't need to do)which will allow you to be in a positive state of mind.
Just don't do too much of it otherwise you will be tired before the actual school year starts probably not the best of the start to the year when you should be refreshed and raring to go.
Good luck though with this year.

Well if you're doing some holiday homework, it definitely does show that you're motivated, and this us crucial for VCE success. But of course, don't get bogged down by it all. Spare some time for relaxing and prevent yourself from burning out before the school term starts. Oh and I'd also like to add; being ahead of the class by a term or semester, or even a year, in some cases, wouldn't be all that beneficial. You want to really master and continue the concepts, so staying ahead of the class by around one to two weeks would be more than enough.

I worked like an animal the last week of year 11 (Year 12 orientation) and got all my holiday homework done then.

I then spent the next 8 weeks drinking copious quantities of beer, Riding mountain bikes everyday and not really considering school until the weekend before we went back. It was AWESOME! I entered the year feeling refreshed and ready to study.

In my case, I found the year to be very long, you will have an abundance of time in which to master (or partially master as in my case) your subjects.

Relax now while you can!

No. With the exception of maths.

The most important factor is maintaining motivation.

Regardless of summer holidays, if you have more than 1 week of your 2 week holiday away from study not doing anything, I would question your ability to get a 90 ATAR - particularly the Term 2 and Term 3 holidays. They are not and shouldn't be treated as holidays if you want to do well as far as I'm concerned.

I wouldn't go that far. Some study while away from school is important, but relaxation is too.

It's holidays and I haven't even started any homework yet. I know it's a far cry from all the MHS and MGS students finishing the first unit of their subjects and what not, but I know I'm still going to be chasing my goal of a 98+ ATAR during the year. :P It's good to have a bit of fun on your summer holidays, because as flash36 said, most of the term holidays will/should be for study.

I'm about to finish everything I set out to do, because the way I see it the earlier I finish the more time I have to relax, not stressing about work I haven't done.

“We are all alone, born alone, die alone, we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely -- at least, not all the time -- but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.”
