Gonna assume you're talking about the Commerce elective available in third year in the Accounting & Finance course plan. It can basically be any commerce subject. As long as you meet the requirements for your major (eg. 3 level three accounting and finance subjects) and the BCom (certain amount of third level subjects + breadth) it can be anything. So, if you want to give marketing a shot then do it, or maybe management, or maybe an accounting subject in something less conventional (eg. Fraud, or Accounting for Corporate Entities).

Usually you cannot do level 4 subjects until you are in honors, but I've heard of cases where people with outstanding marks have been allowed to do them early.

Electives are basically just subjects within your faculty, but outside your particular major. For example, maths subjects would be science electives for an engineering major and history subjects would be electives for a French major.

^ Correct.

They can be within your major if you so choose.

If you're following the Accounting & Finance course plan, a lot of people will take either Econometrics or Basic Econometrics (depending on what maths they did in second year) to ensure they are elligible for Honours in Accounting or Finance.

Ah, I should have been more specific.

If it's part of your major then it's classified as a major subject, rather than a science elective. If it's within your faculty, but not from your department, then it's a science elective. If it's from your department, but isn't specifically required to get your major, then it can still be a science elective. A good example of this is Electrical System Implementation, which is a 3rd year electrical engineering subject that most electrical engies take, but it isn't one of the four subjects at 3rd year level which constitute the 'Electrical Systems' major.
