Improving chances for a second/third round offer
« on: January 19, 2011, 07:22:26 am »
Hey guys.

1. Is there anything I can do to improve my chances e.g by visiting the university and constantly registering my interest with the selection officers, confirming that i actually do want to do commerce or something along the lines??. If so, what sort of stuff would i say?? Has anybody had any experience when trying to get a second/third round offer?

2. My dream course was always commerce at Melbourne. I missed the clearly in by 0.2. I have no idea how this system works, do i have any chance of getting an offer in second/third rounds???

any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

1) Nope. I can confirm this because I emailed Monash's Law faculty and asked (I have one of TCE subjects currently under review and if it goes my way my ATAR will be above the clearly in for BA/LLB) and they said that there's nothing more that can be taken into consideration, it will just be based on the numbers of students that reject their offer and who is next in the queue.

2) Did you apply for a SEAS category? Melbourne doesn't do second round offers for non-SEAS students unfortunately. If you're not a SEAS student, you won't be getting a second round offer from UoM :(

Thanks for advice man but that last sentence almost shattered my dream. I am not a SEAS student but.....

I called VTAC 10 minutes ago

the university of melbourne offers second round offers to both SEAS and NON-SEAS applicants. Basically everyone apart from international students.

Well yes you would expect them to say "there is nothing that can be done". Otherwise everyone would be emailing Monash Law Faculty. I can't imagine that a simple email would change their minds.I was rather referring to just getting your name and your interest out there, letting them know that you are serious!!!!!!

Really?  VTAC said that non Access Melbourne students have an opportunity for second rounds?

Then UoM probably changed it this year.

I think they give preference to access students, who end up filling (or maybe mostly filling) the 2nd round spots. Could be wrong though..

My point is that I had a somewhat legitimate cause for concern - my ATAR might jump up to 98.50 in the next month or so and even then there was nothing they could do to "improve my chances". I'd guess that even if you walked right up to one of the selection officers and pleaded your case you would get exactly the same response.

Yes you do-my friend did this for medicine ( not in VIC) despite her low UMAT score ( which is major requirement). So have hope?

I didn't actually know UoM would accept irregular offers, judging from how strict their selection processes are. People can send in an irregular offer. A friend of mine changed her mind to going Monash's Health Science and sent in an irregular offer for UoM's Science and it got approved a day later.

Call the university, ask about irregular offers, second round offers etc. Basically just say "how can I get an offer".

They do have a fair bit of leeway, depends on whether or not they are allowed to offer you a place.
