Probably cheaper to bus it? Considering petrol costs and parking permits etc.
Btw why do you have UOM userbar? LOL
Yeah once you factor in petrol, maintenance, insurance and rego... you're looking at about $10,000 a year excluding the cost of the car. Bus is like what $1000 a year? Depends how much you value your time and safety i guess.
$10,000 a year?! LMFAO!!! You sure that doesn't include the cost of the car? =P
My car costs about $5000 a year (petrol, parking, insurance, rego, citylink, maintenance), and I'd be paying most of those bills even if I didn't drive it to uni anyway.
Also, sometimes you should also consider the costs of public transport too... My cost v. benefits:
- I consider insurance, rego and maintenance to be like sunk costs - I pay them whether or not I drive to uni, so they don't influence my decision.
- Fixed cost is the parking permit, variable costs are citylink and petrol.
- So driving my car to uni ends up costing me $28.46 each day I go (based on 3 days a week).
- Public transport is $5.60 a day, but takes an extra 45min travel time compared to driving.
- I earn an average of about $22/hr, so that extra 45min is worth about $16.50 to me.
So I consider the difference between me driving and me using public transport to be $6.36 a day ($28.46 - $16.50 - $5.60). That's a price I'll happily pay to not have to run between platforms (I would be required to catch two buses and two trains in order to get to uni), stress about delays/services not running at all, get smooshed into packed trains, or have to smell armpits for close to 4 hours each day. Also, if I had to allow just over an hour and a half to get to uni (instead of 50mins), I'm pretty sure I'd never rock up to class... most uni students don't have much motivation to go to class when the alternative is more sleep.
