Methods/Specialist Tutoring
« on: January 23, 2011, 04:42:13 pm »
Hey guys,

My name’s Axel and I graduated from Melbourne High School in 2010 and will be undertaking the Bachelor of Science at the University of Melbourne.  I achieved an ATAR of 99.65 with the following study scores:

English – 44
Chemistry – 43
Psychology – 43
Mathematical Methods (CAS) – 45
Specialist Mathematics – 50
Chinese (Second Language) – 34

I’m currently offering my services as a tutor for both Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics for all VCE units.  However, given the discrepancies between schools for General Maths: Specialist, it would be helpful if students wanting to be tutored in General Maths: Specialist provided me with a syllabus or an outline of the coursework.

I would be lying if I said Methods and Specialist weren’t my favourite subjects in VCE; in fact I will most likely be taking a Mathematics based major in my university course.  However, I would like to point out that in year 9 I received a C on my Mathematics exam – a claim that a fellow ex-classmate will be able to confirm.  The reason I am pointing this out is that achieving a study score of 45+ isn’t something only allowed for ‘geniuses’ or ‘freaks’, it’s something that’s achieved through hard work, perseverance and active, productive learning.

In relation to subjects such as Methods or Specialist, it’s important to know that there isn’t only one way of approaching a question (just as there isn’t always only one answer). Having learnt both the Methods and Specialist courses as thoroughly as I did, I do feel that I have a great enough knowledge of different techniques and processes such that I will be able to offer a different perspective on topics that you may not see through learning alone or solely in the classroom.  In doing so, you allow yourself a far greater opportunity in achieving your maximum potential, both study score and ATAR-wise.  I also possess a number of resources that I accumulated over year 12 in preparation for SACS, exams etc which I would be more than happy to pass on.

I charge $20 an hour for Units 1&2 and $30 an hour for 3&4.  Groups can be negotiated, but one-on-one lessons are preferred because, as I said before, everyone learns in a different way and I want to ensure I am able to cater to your needs as best as I can.  I live in Croydon (near the end of the Lilydale line), so lessons will most likely be done at the State Library, given its centrality.

Do not hesitate to PM me or email me at [email protected] with any queries.

Was in his form in year 9, and can very much confirm this claim.  He got a C, C for crapped all over my scores in maths.  The guy is VERY DAMN GOOD at his maths and was robbed of a 50 in methods by some shocking SAC marking on our Methods' teacher's part this year.  Trust me, this guy is the man to go to for tutoring, plenty of resources and will always help you out.
