Double Majors
« on: January 25, 2011, 12:15:06 am »

Hi, i'm just doing B.Comm and have some questions about the course.

I know it's possible to do a double major by combining Economics and Finance. What i don't know is how i structure my subjects to cater for this.

I understand that for first year i have to do Intro Micro, QT1 and Intro Macro, leaving 3 electives and 2 breadth components.

I'm considering doing some politics and international studies related subjects for my breadth.  So how do i choose my subjects for first year to cater for the double major?

Thanks

for finance i know you have to take FNCE10001 - Finance 1

for your economics what you should do is
find out what 3x level 3 subjects you need to do (thats in your 3rd year)
check the level 2 prerequisites of those subjects (thats what you'll do in 2nd year)
and finally check the level 1 prerequesite of those level 2 subjects, thats what you should enrol in for 2011

for example all 3 finance level 3 subjects required level 2 "Business Finance" so take that in your 2nd year
"Business Finance" requires level 1 "Finance 1" so take that in your 1st year

dammit i hope i made some sense :S haha

"Business Finance" requires level 1 "Finance 1" so take that in your 1st year

or An approved quantitative subject and an approved accounting subject.

Most common is QM1 and ATA

Check the handbook for full subject list

I want to add to this...
Would it be a lot harder doing a double major?

Unless you pick them in completely unrelated areas, not really, it's just another 4 subjects that you'd be doing anyway

Required commerce subjects for econ/finance major:

Second year subjects

    * Organisational Behaviour

I'm interested in majoring in econ/finance as well. However I can't see how the subject 'Organisational Behaviour' is needed for this double major...do you mind telling me why it's needed?

Sorry to sidetrack the main topic, but on a related note:

I know you can't do double majors offically (i.e. get it written on the completion certificate) within the BSc, but say if you complete the requirements of two majors, can you legally claim to have done both majors?

You can't say something like "I have a double major in Anatomy and Physiology" but when you give your transcript it's obvious that you've studied both areas in depth.

You could say "I majored in Anatomy but also studied Physiology at the same level"

Melbourne Model doesn't cater for them, it's ideologically opposed to the idea afaik.

Wouldn't be surprised if they disappear from Commerce in the future

You can't legally claim both majors. If you did subjects for both Anatomy and Physiology, and have nominated Physiology as your major in the study plan, then you can't do honours in Anatomy even though you have completed subjects for it. If this is the case, you can always re-nominate it then apply for your honours project

That's frustrating :/ Might have to do a diploma instead. Do you think there's any chance they're re-implement double majors for the BSc?

Also, what do you mean by "re-nominate it"? How does that work after one has graduated?

You need to let them know before you graduate and they will change it for you. Not sure if this is possible after though

The official stance is "possibly, we're thinking about it"

Completing a double major doesn't really add a whole lot though
