How detrimental is it to miss 1 lecture every week, and then attend a prac straight after that missed lecture (considering the prac is every week)? the coordinator says no lectopia at all. btw the subject is famine in the modern world.

I did that subject in first year. I found the lectures extremely important, seeing as though the slides themselves were void of any detail. Then again, they seem to have changed the coordinator, so maybe it'll be different.

You'll be fine missing a few lectures a week. Just read the lecture notes and you'll catch up in minutes.

As for pracs, they're generally not directly based on the lectures that have just past. Your lab manual will basically teach it to you.

Not really. They were spent doing activities on the computer and/or discussing reading material.

Nope.  Maths lectures aren't recorded.

...  In Calculus 1, there are different lecturers for different streams.  As a result, each lecture will be at different pages of the lecture notes, albeit they will be at similar places.  Some lectures might be a bit behind and some might be a bit ahead.  As such, you are strongly encouraged to attend the one stream (or go to multiple ones but ensuring that you go to your main ones).  Additionally, to make matter more complicated, Calculus 1 does not do this:

1.  Have lectopia, where lectures are recorded.
2.  Have full and completed lecture slides available for download.

And that goes for Calculus 2 & Linear Algebra as well.

Well, sort of.  If you miss Maths lectures, you're epically and royally screwed unless you manage to catch up, which is doable depending on your mathematical ability I suppose.

Maths is unique - usually 80% of the assessment is based on the final exam.  So heads up:  don't screw up the exam if you're doing maths.

I don't know what maths subject you're doing, but maths subject generally give you skeleton notes so you have to copy out all the lecture slides each lecture. It's a pain in the arse to catch up, so definitely go to maths.

I always found that catching up on maths was easier than a normal subject. Borrow a friend's set of notes and you can copy them out in ~20 minutes?

Never did a maths subject at uni, but for Famine, slides were usually like.. 3 dot points and the lecturer would elaborate on each.

hmm. maybe i'll just see for myself if i can catch up to the famine sub. worse comes to worse, i'll drop the geo major for environmental studies minor.
