Wait what?

You can pay your way into Med? No regard for UMAT/interview?

Graduate Med at Melbourne has guaranteed entry if you get a 99.0+, but it costs like $50,000 a year.

Not exactly. There are no full fee spots at undergraduate levels in non-private universities, because the government doesn't allow it. At postgraduate level, full fee spots exist and are given to those who just miss the cutoff for a CSP spot. Some universities may have special criteria (eg the UoM guaranteed pathway) for awarding places.

ohh but i hear if you go biomed, and you had 99, you have a guaranteed place (if you're liwling to pay)
would that be 9k + ~18k = ~27k, or is it 51k like i hear?

lol 99...more like 99.9.

No, full-fee paying graduate is 99.0 for guaranteed access. CSP is 99.9.

You can load your graduate program onto FEE-HELP as a full-fee paying citizen of Australia, however you can only borrow $108,000 or so and the full program is $200,000. With CSP, you can just load the CSP onto FEE-HELP.

Can you answer my previous Q? Why wouldn't people take it? I fail to see a drawback.

You need to be able to come up with $200,000 over the five years ($100,000-odd if you're using all your FEE-HELP).
Basically, it's really, really, really expensive. That is why people do not do it; they hope for Guaranteed-CSP thanks to a 99.9

EDIT: Also, you need to keep up a 75% grade average.

Which isn't too easy.

Well using the numbers iamtom has given, that's an excess of $100k out of pocket. Then add in the costs of studying; accomodation, living costs, textbooks, transport etc. and that's ALOT of money you'll have to throw in yourself. You pretty much need a car for Medicine given all the travelling around between hospitals, and that's a particularly significant expense. Remember that it takes quite a while until you get your first pay check in Medicine (7 or 8 years through this pathway I think).

Also, reason why I didn't do it other than the costs was because I'm not confident with trusting UoM on this. There are conditions (maintaining a certain GPA and the typical 'subject to availability sort of terms') so they really could dog you out at the last minute. I emailed them asking what sort of confirmation we could get and they said that it's simply a case of mentioning you got over 99 when applying for the graduate program, 2 and a half years later down the track. That sort of uncertainty doesn't sit well with me =S

True.

Why would you even consider MelbUni? You got straight into MBBS @ Monash!

Also, reason why I didn't do it..

2nd round offer. Was considering it initially though before that.

Well there's a document you have to fill out and submit, so it's a formal process and not just a word of mouth thing. It's not like the uni has plans to lure students in and then abandon them

The major drawbacks of the FFP place is that when you graduate you'll be below CSP students in the priority list for an internship and that you'll have to find 200k from somewhere (or 100k with FEE HELP)

and also do you have any links regarding the FEE-HELP? :)

http://www.goingtouni.gov.au/Main/FeesLoansAndScholarships/Undergraduate/FullFeesAndFEE-HELP/FullFeesAndFeeHELP.htm

It's all horribly complicated but at the end of the day, just recognise that the limit for medical degrees is 100k (the limit for everything else is 80k)
