Get any medical degree (Monash undergrad/grad, UoM grad and Deakin grad are your Victorian options), and then move on to specialising. I think neurosurgery involves going through a general surgery post-graduate course first (through something like RACS), and then specialising further into Neurosurgery. Basically, be prepared to be studying for a VERY long time. Many end up travelling to specialise anyway so don't fret about which college you go to at a post-graduate level. That'll sort itself out later. First step is getting your first medical degree.
MBBS (hons) - Monash University

Define 'very long time' please and when do you start earning? (after/during intern...and thereafter at ~60 000 approx?...)

You start earning a full time salary in the first year of your internship, which in Victoria is 56k I think.

Very long time...assuming you do a 5 year undergrad medical degree then a minimum of 12 years. That assumes you get into the specialty immediately after finishing your internship, which you almost certainly won't do so add a couple to that.

Neuro is one of the longest training specialties at 6 years.

I was actually wrong earlier, you can't get apply until the end of your second PGY so it's 13 years minimum ;)

If it makes you feel better, OMFS requires a medical AND a dental degree so it's much longer.

As soon as you graduate medical school. So, first year out of university.

Also keep in mind Surgery is tough to get into - and neurosurgery even tougher. Out of 100 graduates, supposedly only 8 become surgeons and out of 100 surgical residents, 2 of those become neurosurgeons.

That could be heresay, but it wouldn't surprise me.

If your worried about money, don't go for med... Commerce or engineering are the ways to go if you want money right out of uni.

Don't do Med for the money, either, because you won't get any for a long time.

So true, but I'm not doing a DDS and an MD and a 6 year specialty :(
