Pharmacy future job prospects

Hey guys, was just looking through whirlpool and found this thread about job prospects for pharmacy.

No idea if its legit or not (sounds like it) but i thought it might help anyone considering to do pharmacy.

If its what they make it out to be looks pretty grim.

Yes this really sucks... I use to want to do pharmacy because it seemed like a job with good pay and good security but then EVERYONE gave me this type of reply and now I have no idea what I want to do. :\

The job may sound awesome and you may really love it but at some time you have to come to the cold hard(i know it sucks) realisation of the kind of world you live in and the capitalist system of employment we have.

Plus a lot of the things that made people go into pharmacy in the first place seemed to of been stripped away lately, according to that thread anyway.

If you like the actual science behind pharmacy, pharmacology might be your thing (haha or maybe I'm biased seeing its probably the major I'm going to do).

If you want the health basis and the interaction with people could always go to dentistry or something similar.

I don't know many people I've met who wanted to do pharmacy for reasons which can only be exclusively applied to pharmacy (eg. being a people person, wanting to help people).

My friend is doing pharmacy and maybe post graduate med after that, they thought it would make a nice safety net but now to me it seems like they're just racking up a bigger debt and spending more time at uni...

Still, it shouldn't be interpreted as saying no one will get a job, of course there are jobs out there, just not great according to the thread.

(Edit: Oh just read what you said, we'll there are plenty of jobs that fit the criteria of good pay and good security. In-fact there was another thread on whirlpool about "recession-proof" jobs.)

lol I wouldn't trust whirlpool for anything at all, particularly for things related to employment. The whole place is full of whingers.

This.  Especially when they talk about engineers.  :)

Really, they're that bad?

I had the assumption they'd generally be accurate.

Damn...

I don't know about whirlpool but I do know that Pharmacy is actually starting to become a dead end job... One of the reasons is that they accept way too many people- the cut off is not high enough. It is quite easy to get 95 these days (subjective, I know) and the UMAT requirement of about 160 (even 140+ sometimes) is only about 70%ile? They really need to reduce the amounts of spots available and increase the cutoffs if they want to fix the problem. :\

Hmm...

I guess you could still go into research.
OR you know... open up your own in a very secluded area. =]

but opening up your own pharmacy isn't the same as opening up any shop. There's a gazillion laws and regulations to abide by.

actually... most of the things on that forum is true.... however with a pharmacy degree.. u dont necessarily have to be a pharmacist u can go into other fields... its harder to find and get into but its definately not posisble... however by saying that... those positions can easily be filled from people from other degrees...

I chose not to do Pharmacy either, because it's more commercialised than I thought it was, and I like to work FOR people, rather than open my own pharmacy. The pay isn't that great, and I say this not because I care although it sounds suss because I do dentistry, but I think, that for what they learn, it's pitiful. For their skills and knowledge base I mean, proportionally it kind of sucks.
I realised that while I was extremely *keen* on STUDYING Pharmacy, PRACTISING Pharmacy is different (not sure if my spelling was correct ><)

Sorry to diss pharmacy, it's definately a great career if you have a certain mindset, I was recently just disillusioned and realised it wasn't what I wanted.

Not to mention Latrobe and RMIT will be introducing Pharmacy (La Trobe already has it), so it's triple a cohort.
AND YES THE CUTOFF IS RIDICULOUS.
