How was orientation for you?

Just interested to see what people thought about orientation.

I reckon for me (a science kid) mine was pretty useless and it wasn't even that great.

We went to 2 information sessions, both for science.

The first one was just welcomes and a few odd notes here and there from the co-ordinators of our various first year science units. Some of them came up with vary outdated photos, one guy had a short haircut and he was clean shaven, in his photo he had like massive long hair and a weird goatee beard hybrid, they should of preserved it for future generations to study cause that thing looked alive. One of the co-ordinators also gave us a tip on how to review our units at the end, good feedback like "he talks too fast" and not that "i don't like him because he has a beard"(was an actual submitted review).

I guess all the beardophobes unionised and banded together in an organised conspiracy plot.

Well thats all i learnt from that session.

The second session was pretty much the first session over again with some extra stuff about blackboard.

Maybe they were good for people who had no idea what they were doing but they weren't that great for me.

I only met like one guy and he was from VN but we planned that anyway.

I swear guys those things aren't conductive to meeting people.

I can see how it could be hard for someone to meet anyone if they're alone.

Went on a campus tour and our guide was the most unenthusiastic person about his job I've ever met, some samples:
"This is the library, you'll find books here....moving along"
"I hope you guys dont end up here *points to building*, if you do bad luck" (without giving a reason)

The guy kept moving really fast as well and running from the top to the bottom of our large group and he even read his welcome to us off a script!

I swear he hated it so much he wanted to do a runner haha..

I walked straight through the orientation festival for like 2 minutes (haha i wanted to get home before peak-hour), kind of regret it actually, i might go back but I'm 2 hours away (one way) so seems kind of pointless.

Last but not least, Dude, why do monash have to be so environmentally friendly...

The only bags they had in the bookshop were these paper bags with like a twine handle. Sure they might save the odd tree or baby seal choking but they're not made for carrying textbooks! and they hand these things out in the bookshop.

They might be fine for a couple pens or your monash shirt/hoodie that makes you a walking billboard or gets you beaten up on the train but they're definetly not made for carrying books. I had like two text books and some course notes in one of them, it digs into your hand, almost cut it off man. My hand is still sore. Moral is if you go to the bookstore bring a backpack or some good old plastic bags while they look on in horror.

How was it for everyone else?

(I realise some people havent had it yet)

pretty good, befriended lots of people, signed up for some societies, got free beer and fairy floss, and got ignored by enwiabe as he walked past me. and of course the free soft drinks. got photos at the coke stand, and a bunch of free red bull, tried to start up a dance floor, but then it rained.

That said, my faculty orientation is not till tomorrow.

I was just wandering about until i met a couple of friend from my old school. Wanted to check out some clubs but I don't think they're set up yet cause there's a bunch of empty tents. (will probably be on tommorrow-MSA Orientation Festival)

Did a self-semi lost tour around campus. The free bbq line was way too long so I sneaked into the international students area for some food and drinks(being an asian they wouldn't question me :D)

The MSA sign-up queue was wayy to long but I got my ID card instantly. Wanted to sign up for some clubs and then I realised that I'm holding a bunch of foreign currency-got back from oversea yesterday :P

Went to the Career's Seminar and found it wasn't useful to me

That about sums up my first day. Hope tomorrow's engineering workshop and MSA Orientation Festival will be more interesting.

Various BBQ's and also "Monash Party Hard", though you will struggle to get more than two pots

LOL @kingpomba's first post.

mine was ermm..
NO FREEBIES, we walked passed some cafe or some random thing and they gave us yellow "admit one" tickets you'd get at like a carnival or something. i totally did not understand that.
and meeting people in orientation?
so many people had friends with them...you could tell they already knew them.

and then there was like a bbq, which i think was free, but im muslim, and it probably wasn't halal, so i didnt stay long after the tour finished.
our tour guide wasn't bad, he cracked a few jokes here and there, was pretty realistic, gave some good advice...
but then, the beginning presentations were SOOO BORING. well it was only boring mostly when the staff would get up to say stuff...but there was like this acted scene while we were there, which was like filled with info about the uni, and was funny too. so that was good.

but anyway. overall orientation sort of made me hate monash. apparently theres a thing called "speed friending" which i am so not going to try because it could be filled with creepy people.

hmm...i think i just blabbed on for too long.

Eh meh, it was okay. I agree about the science faculty orientation -- it wasn't much use, if any, at all. The tour that I went on was... okay, but couldn't hear anything much haha... will still get lost on my first day but whatever. As for meeting people, I befriended the people sitting next to me, discovered I'm share classes with both, which I'm amused at because I'm only taking two science-related units this semester... hmmm got a fair amount of free stuff, and kept getting approached by the Monash International Students Association (for the last flipping time, I AM A LOCAL STUDENT!!).

Had the conversation of:
'where do you live?'
'Arthurs Creek.'
'where?'
'Arthurs Creek.'
'huh?'
'know where Hurstbridge is?'
'...'
'how about Kinglake?'
'you live THERE?!' wayyy too many times. Especially with random international students trying to get me to join various asian-related clubs, who probably only know Kinglake cause it got burnt to a crisp not long ago. =.=

As a side note though, I should have prolly followed JinXi's tactics on getting free food... lmao, and be Asian when it suits me...

I agree those things were kind of difficult to meet people in if you went alone, like I did. It's not impossible though.

I have an Arts Faculty orientation thingy on wednesday now... haven't decided if I'll go yet.

I did lol at the rolling bubble thing, though. hehe...

BusEco orientation was alright.. got a lot of free stuff (scarf, toothbrush, free maccas cheeseburger cards, notepads, pens/pencils, drinks, sushi :D, calenders etc) but apart from that the 'Amazing race' challenge was a complete was of time (it was fun until our group realised there was another page to do lol)
