Usually first week is mostly lectures. Tutorials generally start in week 2 but you might have a tute for some subjects.  The lectures only cover the course outline and you might touch on the first topic but nothing intense. With tutes, it's mostly getting to know ppl (intro's etc.) and going through the unit outline. So no, it won't be "hardcore".

First year, first week is basically:

- Go through unit outline in lecture
- Start first topic (usually only in like... the last 10 mins of the lecture... nothing hardcore)
- If there is a tute in week one, it's usually just introduction/welcome to uni activities.

However, I do recommend you do your week two readings in week one.

the first week is ok pretty easy

then they plough through the topics and you have a light workload at the start and then boom all these assignments later on lol

First week is largely introductory lectures into the subjects. First 2 months or so is basically unit 3 and a bit of unit 4 Bio so half the cohort falls asleep (i.e. those who already did Bio). The non-science subjects are also pretty basic during that time. Pretty much just sociology and ethics which are a joke really. There's not really anything to study for a long while. First semester is pretty chill overall. Starts stepping by semester two though.

When does it start get really intense (like 2 or 3 weeks into it) or is it generally laid back (is it as "stressful" as yr 12 was?)
And does anyone know if marketing, management, psych and academic writing is hard or not?

I can only speak for my own faculty, but for Arts, things really start to pick up in Weeks 8-12. That's when you're going to have several major 2000+ word essays due, and if you're really unlucky with your unit selection they may all be due within days of each other. As long as you plan how you're going to tackle this well in advance, it shouldn't be a problem.

Honestly, uni is about as intense and stressful as you want it to be. Nobody's going to hold your hand and tell you when your essays are due and demand that you turn up to lectures. Personally I never found uni as difficult or stressful as VCE, but then again I'm just a straight Arts student. ;)

I took Academic Writing back in 2009 and I found it very dry but incredibly easy to score good marks in. So if you're looking for a bludge subject, you picked the right one, haha. I looked at the reading list for Academic Writing this year though and it seems they've revamped the unit significantly; it actually looks easier than in 2009.  :D So I doubt you'll have a problem there.

Do we need to bring lecture pads? Or just the lecture notes?

It's up to you. Some people buy/print out lecture notes and make marks on that. Some people bring in exercise books and writes down all the content. Here's the thing, if you felt really comfortable and learnt well in VCE by taking notes down in an exercise book, then keep up that habit. There's no reason you should stop it if it works for you

Although engineering has a lot of maths, we still have to use words. You need to explain what you're doing and assumptions you make and why things should be used. However can still get through it by focusing a lot more on just the maths :)
