Another VU topic sadly.

Completing my final year of school and intend to head straight into uni.

Won't be expecting something above 90, I intend to do a double degree, a bachelor of psych / bachelor of business (human resources), can't seem to find that course anywhere but VU, though prob is elsewhere.

Seems like VU has a bad name, but from the research I've done its no where near as bad.

For psych/hr will the prestige of my uni affect me that greatly?

I intended on doing a further 4 years in psych to get a Ph.D.?

The uni is quite close and it seems it would suite me the most.

Psych and HR aren't heavily academic based and revolve around interacting with the person, so it would seem foolish to attend a heavyily academic based uni.

Maybe a career would be a little harder to find, but imo, those who stay behind a book till their mid thirties attaining all sorts of degrees won't be able to truly help you psychologically and wont be a very good 'human resource' as they are nothing more than words that cannot be applied.

Just a thought, hope I don't sound too arrogant or what not.

TLTR; how will my uni (VU) affect my career in psychology/human resources

Well if you, and an equally qualified person from Monash for example apply for the same job, the guy from Monash will have an upper hand.
It's not a guarantee you won't get the job but I don't see why you would take such a disadvantage.

You "stay(ing) behind a book" is bad, what does VU offer that's better in that regard?

VU actually has a pretty good business school, they have a relatively decent ranking in that area.
At the end of the day not everyone has perfect credentials from an elite university

Hands on what? It's psych haha, please specify and maybe I can find out if Unimelb has something similar (I'm doing psych too) to help you choose.

Not sure about Campuses, I *think* Monash has a Parkville one, but it depends on where your course is offered. (Check on VTAC).

VU is honestly not that bad. Don't worry.. Plus, I don't really see how the institution from which one graduates dictates their quality as an employee - there is an awful lot which you must learn yourself in a new position; so, rather than prestigious schooling, it is your ability to learn and adapt which matters.

But I digress, if you are going to do further study (PhD), then your undergrad uni will be almost insignificant to employers, I think.

I certainly wouldn't consider travelling so much further if I were in your position.

Wut. Yes they are. And why would you deliberately choose a course that was academically weaker just because interpersonal skills are valued more highly for your field than for, say, maths? That's like saying "I draw well, so I don't need a ruler."

Sorry if I interpreted wrong, if you have a PhD the uni matters little?

I would think that if you go on to do further study, then the uni which you did your undergrad would not have a great influence on your perceived employability.

It seems that more or less those who are fixated on VU being a horrible uni have less posts and/or worse grammar...

Well idk theres not really any other close unis.

Don't worry about what's close. The next few years make up a very short period in your life. Don't skimp on your education because of laziness and just choose the better University.'

And I didn't even notice the bit that Rustic_metal bolded!

You can bet they are! Psychology isn't 'counselling' like people see it. You're taught about the brain/neurons etc. so yeah, Psych and HR are definitely academically based! If it was hands on, it would be a tafe course instead!

To be honest, its not just prestige that people are worried about, its also the work ethic and environment of VU. That said, its only a few years of your life, and you can always apply to do a postgraduate somewhere else. Work hard and don't worry about it now.

Talking as someone who's doing a Psychology major, there is a fair bit of biology in it. There is also a fair bit of statistics as well. IF you are not comfortable with tackling those topics, then I will suggest you consider another degree. In all the Psychology undergraduate subjects (at Monash at least), there is only one topic related to counselling and that's an elective. You'll go nowhere near a patient as an undergraduate student.

Very few people studying Psychology will actually get into a specialisation of Psychology that actually involves the stereotypical Psychology as you might see it on TV. Most of what actually happens in counselling bares no resemblance to what actually happens in Psychology practice. You'd have to recourse to the scientific literature, for example.

And if you're going for a PhD, it might be difficult to get into a good PhD course if your undergraduate degree isn't as prestigious.
