Listening to music whilst studying.

Just wondering what effects music has whilst one is studying.

Is it detrimental to the quality of study? Less information is absorbed?

Personally I can focus a lot better when studying w/music. I can get distracted really easily when people are talking outside or with the sounds of the TV.

Been told that the study area and the way you study should be a mock up of exam conditions (cant listen to music whilst in an exam).

Well, it depends on what type of study you do. So if it in intense and requires concentration then I'd say don't listen, because it does have an effect. And even if you say you can still focus and whatnot, it's still better to because you'll make your self used to it and it would be harder for you in exam conditions.

If it's light study and doesn't require the above, then I think it's okay.

I've heard that listening to mozart's sonata D-major or something is especially good whilst studying

I usually listen to classical or soundtracks when I'm studying. Sometimes I put on some hip hop if I'm in the mood.

“We are all alone, born alone, die alone, we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely -- at least, not all the time -- but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don't see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.”

Maybe listening to some music before studying, like for 5 minutes to clear your mind.
I can't have music and concentrate on work at the same time.

Yes, I agree with listening to music before you start studying, just to get pumped up and so the oxygen starts flowing to your brain.

Being a humanities student, I can't concentrate on reading/writing if I'm listening to music with lyrics, but I do like studying with background music (with no lyrics).

I shall try rainymood. It looks awesome. :D

Having a snack (nuts/sultanas) or a drink (tea works best for me) while you study also helps. :)

I listen to this if I'm ever studying on Friday nights, just so I get into the groove.
