Why do people study at interstate universities?

Hi everybody!

I am wondering, if someone is considering doing Biomedicine/Science/Engineering, are there any benefits for him/her to do their university course interstate instead of at their home state?

And generally speaking, is it better for students to study outside of their state or within their state? If someone wanted to study Engineering or Science at an interstate university, how would the person support themselves financially? Would they have to get a job? And if so, wouldn't this be difficult with full-time study? How do university students usually manage to study interstate as well as support themselves financially? Is it a hard process? I've never lived alone before and I'm just considering interstate.

Anyway, any help regarding my questions will be deeply appreciated!

It is all about the money. Yes, you would probably need to get a job because you are staying for 4-6 years. Accommodation is also probably the biggest issue. Staying on-campus would just drain your money real quick, so most people who go alone generally pair up with another person(s) and share.

Studying interstate is a good option if you have a reason to do it, if you like the university, if you think they offer a good course, etc.

It's true to say that living interstate is expensive, the solution to that can be a combination of having supportive parents, getting youth allowance, having a scholarship, getting a loan from the bank and getting a job. It's definitely not impossible, but it can be difficult depending on a number of factors. I find juggling work and university is pretty easy, work university and an illustrious social life less so.

Really depends. It is always better to stay in your home state when you possibly can, but if situation doesn't allow you ( i.e. really wanting to do med and only one uni possible) then you'd have to go ( if you chose to)

With financial support, then it would definitely come first from family, and possibly family friends. Then later comes work if you can afford the time. Like someoe mention, students look for a shared accomodation with other students in their place-and it does sometimes gets hard. However there are a few finanical reliefs, especially if you have centrleink and the scholarship start-up, and possibly another scholarship offered by the uni.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

I really liked the course I got offered interstate. There wasn't really anything else in Australia which would set me up to do research. I got a good enough mark to get large scholarships everywhere I applied, so I reasoned that I may as well use the opportunity to do the best degree possible. I also reasoned that I'd do 6 months or a year on exchange, so I'd have living expenses for that, and I'd probably move out of home by honours anyway.

basically increases your chances of you getting into medicine xD.. plus its a good experience being independant and what not.
