When I see a youth thus engaged,葉he study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle

I think the whole debate about "school uniform," shows distinguish between rich and poor if school uniform is not enforced and makes a big difference or whatever is quite bullshit.

In fact, encouraging school uniforms, generally, just makes people become desperate to look good when they hang out with friends with their casual wear and over stylize themselves to the extent they look like posers or what not.

Drawing from my UHS days, that is 100% true.

i agree with the article.
it's true, think about the classes with teachers who let you listen to ipods. Possibly one of the least controlled classes (takes the teacher a few tries before everyone starts listening) and maybe least productive..[but that would depend on what other classes you take]. Also, that's probably the teacher you happen to go 'oh, he/she won't mind... he/she's nice as' before you wag class,  not hand in homework, etcetc.

But what do iPods have to do with uniform? Are you suggesting that people not wearing uniform are distracted and not on task, generally?

Part of the argument was, ipod's are not part of the school uniform, thus are not allowed. And if teacher's let students use ipods, then teachers are allowing student's to 'undermine' their authority. Which is ridiculously true when you think about it, and the point I am trying to prove. So basically, strict uniform rules = better learning environment; but of course, there are many other factors which affect student behaviour [i.e. the people in your class, the tightness of teachers, the school]
Enforce your uniform rules and make your students obey and respect teachers, as well as the school rules. Don't let them bend the rules [and listen to ipods]. The pathways to a good class.

I wonder why UHS is one of the top state schools, exceptions (selective state schools).

Ohh, did I tell you, they wear no school uniform. Go figure.

If you want a theoretical reason to wear school uniform; wear it to your exams and you'll perform better.

On the actual topic, I don't think it's essential. I agree with the premise of that article, that teenagers would benefit from wearing it but you can achieve the same goal through implementing other rules or constructs.

Ohh, did I tell you, they wear no school uniform. Go figure.

Yeah, i did know that, quite a few of my mates are from that school.
You know what? they have accelerated programs xD
I'd've gone to balwyn high because their accelerated program allows you to do up to (9 subjects was it?) and that could improve ATAR chances massively.

And as i said before, learning is largely dependent on your school.

Also, using your logic... what about the actual top 10 schools etc? do they have uniform? you can exclude selective schools too. go figure.
i dont like the logic xD

edit: background research says UHS (uni high school right? awks if im looking at the wrong school) came 60th last year. I'm not hating on the school btw, i like that place, except you brought it up.

Wait, so what your trying to argue again? School Uniform does matter or uniform does not matter? Are you contradicting yourself and agreeing that school uniform doesn't play a pivotal role in student's success.

They were also ranked 9th in State School Ranking (including selective schools)

http://bettereducation.com.au/Results/VcePublicSchoolResults.aspx

I did say "one of the top state schools" and nothing else.

My argument? Enforce school policies better. Which leads to: No 'undermining' of authority, better behaved students, enforcement of uniform rules etc.

Honestly, I don't think school uniform is essential but I like the belonging aspect :D.
... obviously uniform itself will not increase yours scores? LOLOL.

Doesn't MacRob ditch uniform for yr12s in winter months? Doesn't seem to effect their performance or the 'school image' in any way...
