Why school uniform really matters

It's not a communist thing, communism is an economic political philosophy..

It's more about equality, which you seem to have something against... I'm not sure why. No one is better than no one else. We're all in this together, this life, this human struggle, united as brothers and sisters. Well, i think so anyway.

Imagine if you were poor and couldn't afford good clothes and everyone else was wearing designer labels, would you feel great? Would other people tease you?

It's also more about identifying, yes you are indeed a student here, it makes that aspect a lot easier.

Its also about solidarity and cohesion as well, if everyone has the same uniform it really helps that along, its one of the reasons (albeit a smaller one) that the various armed forces have a uniform.

School students shouldn't have to worry about clothes or looking fashionable every day, they should just focus on their work instead of silly things like that. (They can do things like that in uni if they wanted to anyway)

One of my main irks is that schools are profiting (or someone along the way is, and handsomely) from this whole thing. That, and I think uniforms are suppressive in terms of what you can do (play in the yard, feel comfortable) and in terms of individuality. I'm not saying that wearing Brand X makes you "an individual", I'm saying uniforms homogenise students - "YOU ARE A STUDENT, BE DOCILE AND CONFORM TO TEACHER DEMANDS or else risk hurting the school's reputation".

I went to a school with massive disparities in socio-economic status, but nobody ever cared, they just accepted that some kids have more money than others. And in uni, I come wearing clothes that cost under $10 each generally and nobody has ever said anything negative about it. I feel far more comfortable knowing that people are able to accept me whatever I'm wearing. School uniform just sends the message that what you wear actually matters, which doesn't really do anything for equality in the long run.

Also, there's nothing wrong with being treated equally, but schools should accept that not everybody is the same person, and allow them to act as such, and not try to make everybody look exactly the same. I feel more comfortable being accepted as an individual than being accepted because I'm a member of the school and that apparently makes me like everyone else.

I also think that school uniform is far more of a bother than casual dress. You need to keep track of everything and make sure that nothing ends up in the wash on a school day. If something gets muddy you might need to wash it that night in order to wear it the next day. It's obviously much easier to throw on whatever you want. I also think that school uniform is far more distracting in terms of schoolwork because people always end up too hot\too cold because you don't really have a lot of options to adjust to the temperature, and also because it's so uncomfortable. If the school really wanted to maximise the student's welfare, they'd make them wear trackpants and t-shirts and allow warm, comfy jumpers and runners.

Also, school shoes are awful. Have you tried running in lace up school shoes? I've rolled my ankle more than once trying.
