My lecturers don't believe in lectopia .... sometimes their lectures aren't even on Moodle (Our LMS).

all about listening to your lectures at x1.3. get through them faster, makes it somewhat more lively, and less time = less boredom
Especially if they sound like chipmunks

The other week my gf was listening to her lectures at double speed and I didn't even notice until she pointed it out. Some lecturers talk ridiculously slowly.

Some Julia Gilliards also talk ridiculously slowly.

Back on topic ... should I be concerned that my marks have dropped off quite substantially (-20%ish) from my high school grades? I know everyone says your marks will drop once you hit uni but I feel like I'm studying as hard as I did last year and it's actually somewhat depressing knowing that I'm getting grades that I'm really not used to. I guess it's the whole 'small fish in a big pond' scenario. But even still I'm starting to doubt whether I'm just adjusting to how uni works or if I just came from a bad school and now I can't intellectually match the standard that is required.

Any suggestions as to how to cope with this drop or how to improve?

An HD is 80% + (correct?) so it's not like you need that 90% for an A+... But yeah, I suppose a basic suggestion is to get prepared before the semester starts. We seem to just switch off during holidays, when perhaps we could do a bit of work and ease the load later on.

I think uni is just more picky and strict, plus you get tested on broader topics where as in VCE it was a set syllabus. can you actually answer all questions on the assessments? Or have you noticed a change in the marking scheme etc..

Yep a H1 is 80+ but at the moment I'm no where near that level :(. I think I shall try and do that for next semster.

They do seem to be a lot more harsh on little mistakes. Basically a lot of my assessments are essays so essentially I can answer at least some part of what they want me to. It just seems really subjective I guess - I mean if I handed in the essay I just wrote for VCE I could probably get an A+ and yet at uni it's barely a pass. For me, it's just a bit deflating seeing that big jump in marks and the standard required.

First semester of first year is when they mark your essays harshly so you'll learn to adjust to the new style of writing and research etc. If you're getting 65+ then that's reasonable for your first attempts. It'll only go up as you appreciate the changes that need to be made.

At the end of the day they call them honours for a reason, so an H1/2/3 is an achievement

Just as a comment to the contrary, I'd like to point out to everyone still in year 12 that Uni isn't really as scary as it seems.  There are definitely times where you will be overwhelmed, or otherwise shocked by the differences to high school, but just remember that at the end of the day if you stay on top of things, remain organised, and above all else, keeping thinking POSITIVELY, the short-term struggles will conclude and you'll be all the better for it.  =)

Thanks for the advice everyone! It's good to know that it is normal. I guess you also have to keep in mind that 1st year really doesn't count for anything anyway.
