Can I become a doctor if I do a bachelor of science at Melbourne?

I don't think I'll get a high enough enter to get into Biomedicine at Melbourne so the next option is to do a Bachelor of science. Can you only become a doctor if you do biomed or medicine? I am totally lost!! Thanks

Yes you can still get into post grad med if you do science. however, you have to select the prerequiste units.

In fact last year more students from BSc got into the MD (graduate medical program) than from BBiomed.
And yes, you have to select the prereqs (I think they are 2nd year Anatomy, Physiology and EDIT: Biochemistry [Thanks Russ]) if you want to get into MD at Melbourne, BUT if you want to do Graduate Med anywhere else then you don't usually need prereqs, just a certain GPA.

More people from science got in because there were far more people in science. If you do it as a percentage, I'm 99% sure it was a 2:1 ratio the other way.

The 2nd year prereqs are anatomy/physiology/biochemistry and they're not particularly hard to meet

...you have to take the GAMSAT...and that is hard.

Russ will add to this simplistic description but in essence, NO, it is not similar to the UMAT.

It assesses y12 Physics, Biology and Chemistry and other creative aspects.

GAMSAT = Graduate Australian Medical School Admission Test.

It's for everyone trying to get into post-grad Med.

It's hard but unlike the UMAT, can be prepared for.

Science is the same length as Biomed, the entire pathway is 7 years.

GAMSAT is three sections, science (high school physics, uni chem + bio), written responses and reading comprehension.

Written responses are to prompts like "if you lose all your money, what are you worth".
Reading comprehension is generally to classic "literary" passages and poems but they throw some modern ones in as well

The instruction is to "construct a piece of writing" or something similar, so it can be creative/argumentative/analytical etc.
Mum marks it and you're marked on how well you write not on your opinion

They haven't released them formally yet
