International Day of Immunology

29th of April, there's going to be a really interesting set of lectures at the University of Melbourne. I'll be there because it's my major, hopefully some of you guys will also be inspired to attend. If you enjoy the concepts of biology you will enjoy it. Two of the presenters (Crabb and Hartland) I have personally met and been taught by, they're both good speakers.

Assuming you haven't learned much about immunity by then, this would be a great overview of the processes before you go over it in class.

Quote
Every second of every day, your body is under attack! Microbes are all around you – in
your environment, in your food – waiting for a chance to invade. Fortunately, you have a
wonderful armoury of immune cells that are constantly patrolling throughout your body,
ready to fight these microbes and protect you from disease. Counteracting this, microbes
have lots of combat manoeuvers of their own…..

Please join us for an informative and entertaining series of short talks by three leading
Melbourne research scientists on how your immune system battles against infections.
Light refreshments will follow, and a chance to talk more with the scientists themselves.
This is a free event.

Professor Elizabeth Hartland (ARC Future Fellow, The University of Melbourne)
Bacterial diarrhoea: infection by stealth

Professor Brendan Crabb (Director and CEO, Burnet Institute)
Fighting malaria, and the evolution of humans

Professor Anne Kelso (Director, WHO Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza)
The continuing challenge of influenza

When: Friday 29th April 2011, 5.30 pm - 8 pm
Where: Theatre A, Elisabeth Murdoch Building

If you enjoyed the small amount you've studied then you should definitely come along. As a medical student you'll only become more exposed to what they're going to cover; the immune system and the common challenges and global health burdens. I'm fairly sure I have some of the slides Crabb will use, because he delivered our Malaria lectures so I can send them to you if you're curious.

The presentation won't assume knowledge though, it's for the general public.

Wow, I'd love to attend .. but I have 3 SACS the following week :(

Is a lot of the content related to VCE biology? If so, I'd probably go as a treat for myself!

It won't be related as such, but if you've been enjoying the concepts of biology (how a cell works etc.) then this is a natural extension of that. You'll get some insight into the immune system which is a fairly major part of unit 3.

Small price to pay. There's free food provided!

Nah it's probably a BBQ with sausages and no veggie burgers.  Tough vegetarian life.

I doubt it'd be a BBQ, it's not a student event. Biscuits and finger food seems more likely.

But everyone should come, I will do your bio homework for you (maybe...)

Sounds interesting.. If it doesn't cover Unit 3 the time is probably better spent elsewhere, even if there is free food :(

That's not why you should attend though.

Bit of a late response, but I was surprised at the spread of food they had. I was expecting those Arnotts family cream biscuits but they were prettyyyy generous with sandwiches.
