Important Announcement: Mid Year Entry 2011

I have received news from VTAC that the University of Melbourne (UoM) will not be managing mid year applications directly as they have been doing previously.  Instead, they have "outsourced" it to VTAC.

So this applies to you if you are either planning to apply for mid year entry into UoM or a current UoM student planning a mid year transfer to another course within the uni.

For more information:

Mid Year Entry at UoM
Definitely worth reading the section "How does selection at mid year work?"

List of Courses that VTAC administers for mid year entry

Note: Please check out the new indicative GPA.  Most notable changes are for Arts and Commerce - they have gone up to 72 instead of the usual 70.

Can i just ask a few questions.
Person A and B wants to transfer to commerce from a science degree.

Person A: Has met the indicative ATAR but did not meet the GPA standard.
Person B: Has met the indicative GPA but did not meet the indicative ATAR.

Would they both be considered for the place? what are the chances that they will get rejected?

Thanks

If both people have only done a semester of uni (that is, their first year), then Person A will most likely be admitted into B.Com since they haven't completed a full year of tertiary studies and their ATAR holds a higher weighting.  Person B is in a little bit of a complicated situation since they haven't met the 2011 Clearly-In ATAR but has a good GPA.  But depending on how high the GPA is, they might still be in consideration because tertiary studies are a better indicator of success in uni as indicated by staff from the undergraduate faculty of commerce.

However, if both people have done at least a full-time year of tertiary studies, then Person B would most likely have the upper hand because the tertiary results are more recent and like I said before, a better indicator of their success.

In any case, my explanation is just based on the theory.  In practice, I would strongly recommend both Person A & Person B to apply because based on supply and demand, both of these people could make a successful mid year transfer.

if you're applying mid-year, most cases, that means you DIDNT get the clearly-in atar (otherwise you'd already be there) and so you demonstrate your worth by a good GPA right?!

i can understand Person B's position, would have been ME right now if i didnt work that tiny bit harder in year 12 :O :O :O

You'd be surprised.  From experience, I know of people who do mid year transfers are people who have finished year 12 a while ago or those people who absolutely loathe their course after first semester and want out right away so they consider a mid year knowing that their ATAR will save their bacon.

For most people who didn't meet the Clearly-In, an end of year transfer would be more viable after two semesters of uni.

But if you have an awesome GPA after your 1st semester, then that just simply strengthens your application.  And if you're unsuccessful, if you can maintain that level of awesomeness for one more semester, you're definitely in the running.

Anyone been successful in a mid-year transfer in their first year with a lower ATAR than the clearly-in?
