Thanks guys ^_^

I was just quickly wondering whether anyone here could say much about how Yale's regarded in the Australian scientific community (Yale, for a variety of reasons, is how I'm leaning at the moment if I go). Yale's traditionally strong in the humanities, but I heard recently that while Yale for postgrad science (excluding medicine) is weak, it has a wealth of opportunities for undergrads (they just poured 1 billion into their science facilities and programs, and give out 10 million dollars of research funding to UNDERGRADS per year). I don't want to end up going to the states, and be in the situation that I consider working in Australia reasonably soon after finishing my education and not having a well regarded degree :/

I want you to save this post in your archives, come back to it 10 years later and have a good little laugh at your naivety :P

Yes, Yale shits all over any Australian university. They'll look at your CV and go "HOLY SHIT YALE". Yale has a good reputation for EVERYTHING, relative to aussie unis. When they say their science program is 'weak' they're comparing that to the over ivy league schools and, of course, oxbridge. But it's still not weak. It's a ONE BILLION dollar program. The comparisons would be minute and mostly just penis-waving from self-important supporters of the other schools' programs.

tl;dr stop hesitating and go for it or you'll die wondering

Congrats! This is a MASSIVE achievement and I think you should take it. It's all been said, Yale has more to offer than ANY Australian uni and from your posts it seems that money isn't a big issue.

Don't forget where you came from. :D

WOW CONGRATS! getting into 3, no just one, ivy leagues is such an achievement. Hmmm, id say it would be a choice between Yale or Harvard. America has ALOT of oppurtunities and all the big companies like NASA. AMERICA OPENS UP DOORS.. i want to go to america *cries* Harvard is known to be the top uni in the world , so if it was me id go there. Harvard also has better facilities.
SOLUTION: ditch the current bf and find some hot harvard hotties or you could always go to Yale and stalk James Franco cause he's like doing a phd in english or something? ahahahah Just think about when you're 100 or something and looking back on your life... what would you most  regret?

Hey, I agree that the man is incredibly attractive, its just I love using that still from 30rock. He also looks like John Mayer.

Appianway - if you are searching for how these things have any relevance to you going to an Ivy League and leaving Australia, I think there is some subtle trend that you get to meet people from very different cultures... or something... networking for sure.

Have you seen Harvard/Yale/Princeton? (If you have, ignore the rest of this paragraph) I went to visit New Haven last year and I absolutely loved it, it would be a wonderful place to study, I didn't really like Boston/Cambridge very much though, strangely. But yes, New Haven is actually quite a lot like Canberra except the buildings are nicer/older. I'm sure if you visit you would become excited about the idea of studying there!

In the end it's totally up to you and there are lots of things to consider, but I'd totally go for it. And, if after your first year you don't like it, it would surely be easy enough to move back. You can take a year of absence at ANU rather than leave out right, so coming back wouldn't be difficult.
