Hello,

So because I have to decide on a uni course this year, I've been thinking a lot lately about what what I want to do careerwise in the future. The problem is, I doubt that I'd be able to do something that's completely 'humanities style', and vice versa completely 'science style'. And I think I'd enjoy something that had a balance between the practical and the theoretical.

Can anyone think of a job that might suit me?

(By the way, in terms of income, as long as it is 'healthy' and stable then that's fine!)

Environmental management? Policy development? Science business? Patent law?

Teaching - healthy (sort of) and stable income - plenty of opportunities to excel if you're good enough and many varied and fun experiences. A degree such as Arts/Science at Monash would let you finish in five years (including a one year dip ed). What's more, after four years you can opt out of teaching if you see yourself heading in another direction.

Have you thought about completing a Double Degree at university?
If you do something such as a Bachelor of Arts/Business and Science than you will be able to decide what you really like and where to go with it.
You may need to do further study as a result of these but it will give you the most options to explore potential careers and subjects.
Are you set on any universities or careers that interest you?

Edit: Lex beat me in what I was going to say.

I think it might be best for you to pick a few areas of science you like and look for particular specialisations/jobs that seem closer to the humanities side of things. Some areas you're more likely to find these would have to be psychology, geography, environmental studies and archaeology. There's also teaching and history/philosophy of science to look at, as well.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I have now looked into environmental management and it sounds really interesting! Also archaeology hadn't crossed my mind so I'm going to look into that too.
I did think about teaching, but ultimately, I don't I'd handle kids very well!
Yep, so I agree, I think it's probably a double degree of science/arts for the way!

I was also in your position, i don't think nows a good time to decide you definitely want to do science policy or you definitely want to do patent law.

They might be dramatically different from what you imagine, i recommend take something general, its fine to stay at uni for awhile and its fine to take random subject here and there to explore what you like, thats what uni is all about (unless youre one of those people who think its purely just to get a job). Just explore what you like, i think some kind of scienceish/artish degree would be the best or you could go to UoM and do Bsc with arts breadth or Ba with science breadth.

I'm considering science writing as well, but the problem is that it's impossible to get a steady post - you've got to do freelancing. It's still an option though :)

Maybe... you could become an academic specialising in an interdisciplinary field, such as the one taught on this course, which my cousin very much enjoyed.

Yale offers a major in physics and philosophy. My mum said that whatever I do, I shouldn't take it. *sigh*
