I hope you can criticize it as much as you can, my thoughts so far on my speech arent that good yet.

Is the Internet a dangerous place? - Onur

The internet has amazing potential – it gives us the opportunity to ease our lifestyle and to strengthen our general knowledge.  With a few clicks we can keep in touch with our friends, reunite with our long lost family, read the news, shop online, pay the bills and play games. The internet is a wonderful and powerful resource of the 21st century, if it wasn’t it wouldn’t hold the attention of millions world-wide but there is no doubt it can also be a dangerous place.

Each and every one of us acknowledges the internet is dangerous by having anti-virus software. If it wasn’t for the software we wouldn’t bother protecting ourselves.  According to m86 security labs research in March 2011, 80 Million American computers have been affected by malware which is no surprise, also 6.5% of Chinas computers which accumulates to 87.1 million computers have been affected with malware.  Whilst here in Australia, approximately 580000 computers have been affected with contagious virus’ which have the ability to scam internet users.

According to the research undertaken by the Ninemsn website, we come to acknowledge that:
-   If Facebook was a country it would be the 4th biggest populated country in the world
-   That 17million Australians surf the Internet daily and 6.6 of them are daily Facebook users
-   That 37% of teenage deaths are related to cyber bullying

Class, I would now talk about a major contributor to the internet’s negative reputation, social networking.  Social networking is defined as 'the grouping of individuals into specific groups'. Although this can be possible in person, it is through the internet that networking is becoming one of the main tools used for socialising. Millions of individuals from all over the world use online communication sites in order to develop and strengthen their relationships and friendships. Unfortunately thanks to the abusers of this privilege the internet is not safe, these social networking sites allow people to cyber bully which causes trauma, furthermore death.

Social networking is not safe if is not used properly; recently a family friend who has a Facebook account to communicate with family overseas joined a Ben 10 group. A few days later he had received a friend request from a man relatively old who they have no relationship with, soon after they realised who the man was, a paedophile, going through his posts they realised his friends were generally young children, after seeing that they had reported the incident to police. This person was banned from using Facebook but there is always a way to make another account, therefore there is never going to be safety within the social network.

But, greater danger lies in two aspects that are flourishing. The most powerful people on the Internet don't work for Microsoft or Google. Rather, they're a bunch of antisocial, clever nerds who gather at a largely unknown web site called 4chan.org. If your email is hacked, chances are 4chan is behind it, if you are on YouTube and are redirected to Rick Astley’s song then you have been Rick rolled by 4chan.

There are also many criminal gangs who work online, a recent report on The Age newspaper stated that a woman casually entered the main building of Vodafone and had placed an optic fibre cable which redirect customers personal information to the computer of criminals, which made it easier to track down peoples address and find ways to make money out of this private information.

Now I want to talk about the scamming we see on the internet. The technology is out there that most of us are unaware of and so that makes us extremely vulnerable. For example is Adam Savage, host of the popular science program Myth-Busters, posted a picture on Twitter of his new vehicle parked in front of his house, but he let the internet know much more than that he drove a Toyota Land Cruiser.  Uploading the image via his phone gave people his address the location he was at during the photo thanks to a GPS program on his mobile phone. Hence, he revealed exactly where he lived. Being a man who is involved in technology and not knowing that his picture also contained his address shows how an average person is unaware of the dangerous within the usage of the internet. If there are things that we don’t know then we can’t protect ourselves. Most of you must have heard of Google Earths latest expansion, street view. The street view on Google’s site is 3D map of every single street in Australia. This expansion is available to everyone, if your address is typed up on Google Earth people can see exactly what your house looks like, what car you drive and much more.

Every time you use the internet you take a risk and for the moment most people are prepared to continue taking the risk.

Thank you for your time.

Merged the two because I don't know if there is a difference between them.

Good luck.
