Why does this site allow its users to delete their account?

What was primary purpose of this feature being implemented on VN?

Just curious.

Delete by going:
'Profile' (using toolbar)
--> 'Delete this account' (found in toolbox to the left of the profile information, under 'Actions')

Don't know what happens next, haven't ever tried to delete my account :P

Really? :S To the best of my knowledge anything that you sign up for / subscribe for needs a sign-out clause.

Facebook lets you deactivate which is close enough I guess.

Deleting your account is probably for those who decide they don't want to remain a member and want to preserve their privacy, because you can't search for or list their posts any more

Deactivating on facebook does nothing, you can just log in like normal again and it reactivates your account

I have a friend who deleted their whole profile. Although the option was hidden deep into the settings somewhere. This was a year ago and since there have been heaps of changes over that time it may not be available anymore.

It prevents anybody else from viewing your profile/seeing any old comments you've made so it's exactly like deleting your account but with the added bonus of being able to get it back if you want.

You can probably request them to fully delete it but I honestly don't see the point

I remember ther being a way to completly delete it, it's a longer process though. Sometimes I don't see the point of people deavticating and reactivating, because all you're doing is logging in again like usual.
Ancient Persian Proverb; " I Wept because i had no Shoes, until i saw a man with no feet!"

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

Of particular I once accidentally deleted my facebook account!
so, it's definitely possible and it wasn't just deactivated as I couldn't use my e-mail and password to log in.
