Well you need high level vocabulary for most of your essays but you don't want to use an excessive amount. There's also times where using simple vocabulary will be more effective than complex vocabulary.

"complex ideas simply expressed" is the maxim teachers of mine tell me.

Oh ok, because i see some of my friends can write with awesome words i've never seen before... i thought that is better than using 'baby' words.

Thanks for the input guys !

One of George Orwells rules states don't use a big word where a small one will do. Don't make your essay sound to complex or to simple but keep a mix. It depends on the audience your writing for.
‎"We divert our attention from disease and death as much as we can; and the slaughter-houses and indecencies without end on which our life is founded are huddled out of sight and never mentioned, so that the world we recognize officially in literature and in society is a poetic fiction far handsomer and cleaner and better than the world that really is."
- William James.

Sound sophisticated without being overly verbose.  It's a very thin line between the two, but basically the rule of thumb is to use "big words" when appropriate, whilst simultaneously avoiding their usage when a smaller word (read: word, not phrase) will suffice.

Just drop a "big-ish" word here and there just to satisfy part of the criteria, for the most part be concise, and express things fluently, and the best way to do that to keep it simple. If you read it aloud and it makes sense then you're on the right track.
