If you apply straight out of 3rd year, you'll only have GPA1/2 so it's a bigger amount.

You mean if I started BSc 2011 and apply for 2014 med only GPA 1 and 2 will count? Semester 1 grades come out in time and semester 2 grades are considered to be similar to past grades but this is confirmed later on when grades are released or something, sounds strange but I think they are remodelling it.

Yeah I forgot about GEMSAS, because it's new, but they don't make up results for semester 2 afaik

@Elnino, we were talking specifically about medicine. Link me to the page where it says that for eng, I always thought it was 65%

Semester 2 for 3rd year, whats the actual process, are they excluded or is the average grade so far for GPA3 extended over 2nd semester until actual grades are released?

Your GPA-Final (GPA3) is done with semester 1 marks only if they're available. They don't rerank you after your semester 2 marks become available, they'll only exclude you if you've failed a subject or your GPA has dropped below their hurdle minimum

I see, couldnt I then just do the least possible amount of subjects in semester 1 and pile the rest on sem 2 and summer term after that?

That's not as good an idea as it sounds.  I'm freaking out about my average now because all of my credited subjects are just 'exempt' rather than a mark and because I only took three subjects I'm scared my average will be pulled down by Physics.  All it takes is one rotten egg subject and the lesser load becomes a curse rather than a help.

And I'd say you'd probably have to have a full time load for semester 1, so you'd still be taking 3 subjects.

It's a horrible idea. You can't do summer semester or you're not eligible to apply for med and doing a 5 subject final semester is a terrible idea because that's the hardest semester of your degree. For getting to save 1 subject, it's entirely not worth it

Summer subjects in 2014 aside, If Ive accumulated enough points to do 3 subjects per semester in 3rd year, and GPA3 is composed only of (points so far inclusive of semester 1 (3rd year) - 200 (GPA 1 and GPA 2), I mean, wouldn't it be better to do 2 subjects in sem1 to get the highest possible score with the greatest weighting and as you said you're not reranked after sem2 results released unless fail, so in 2nd semester I would just require a pass, (one of 4 subjects in S2 will be a simple breadth to lighten the load)

Serious?

So if I wanted to do a subject this summer, I can't apply for med?  Or do you just mean leaving a subject to the very last summer? In which case, yeah I agree.  Terrible idea.

Doesn't work like that, if you do a summer subject in 2012 and 2013 then you don't get to count 9 subjects in GPA1 and GPA2. You might only do 2 subjects in 1st semester of 3rd year but you will STILL BE CREDITED as having done 4 subjects.

If you want to play the system, you should put in the effort to learn how it works first.

Specifically in 3rd year. To start med in 2014 you must have graduated on or before December 31, 2013. If you do a summer semester subject you won't graduate until Feb 2014.

Thats exactly what I meant, you must have misinterpreted me, this is a matter of time management not "playing the system"

It's the definition of playing the system
