1: ‘Cosi more than entertaining comedy. It reveals the sadness of the lives of the characters’. Discuss.
Does anyone have responses to this essay prompt? Thanks.
you probably want to discuss how it is an entertaining comedy first: this would include black humour, the character's blase to mental treatment, Doug's love of fires, Cherry's pocket knife etc.
Other discussions could be:
yes, it does reveal the sadness: this can be about their isolation/loneliness and the opportunities that Lewis offers them or you can talk about war vs. love and how it is sad that so many characters have seem to moved into a 'hate' rather than 'love' perspective eg/ Lucy and Nick. It's also sad at the end how so many of the characters seemed to improve during the play but then afterwards some died, went into relapse etc.
no, it doesn't reveal sadness but perhaps hope and happiness: the characters undergo a major change, especially Lewis. This play demonstrates to us how mental people shouldn't be isolated and shunned from society but should be cared for by family and friends. The friendship built between Lewis and the 'mental' patient's is not sad, but pleasing for us to see etc.
hope that gives you some more ideas?
