The Reserve Bank is holding a competition for any uni student interested in economics (you don't have to be a commerce/eco student)

The essay topic for this year is The Economics of Natural Disasters. There have been a number of major natural disasters domestically and abroad in 2011. In addition to the significant human and social consequences of natural disasters, there can also be notable effects on the broader economy. Essays should:

1. provide an overview of the aggregate economic impact of natural disasters, distinguishing between the short-run and long-run effects on the economy, including consequences for the capital stock, productivity, economic growth, and inflation; and
2. discuss the implications for monetary and fiscal policy.
