Predictions.

It would be great if people added what they/their teachers predict to be on this years exam.

I'll start. So according to TSFX, these are all possible questions for the exam;
o Tropisms
o amino acid derivatives
o HIV
o Light waves for photosynthesis
o rational drug design
o Possibly neurohormones
o designer drugs

These are for short answers btw.

And there have apparently been questions on the following so they will probably not ask them according to TSFX;
o Photosynthesis
o hormones
o plasma membranes

Things that are not on the study design so most likely won't be asked;
o stuff about water
o stuff on pH

So please contribute your ideas.

Is there a strong possibility of experimental design? My teacher feels that it's been nailed over the past few years, so there's a possibility it might not be on this year's exam.

Oh.
What school do you go to?
These are just predictions so TSFX may be wrong.

I'd be shocked if there wasn't a question on it. It's been in every single exam.

Also, I find TSFX's suggestions pretty useless. For one I think it's highly likely that a question testing a concept relating to the plasma membrane will come up (as it usually/always does) and is obviously fundamental. Photosynthesis and respiration, too, are usually tested in one way or another. Most of the "possibilities" there are just as possible as anything else. Rational drug design is frequently tested so I'd upgrade that to a high likelihood.

And finally, just because something is not explicit within the study design gives no reason for it not to be examinable. Any logical extension can be tested. Water I see as crucial to organisms as it is a medium in which many reactions occur in and is important in many processes that you study such as osmosis. It is part of the cellular environment. pH is also important when it comes to things such as enzyme function and immune system function.

amino acid derivative are hormones derived from amino acids. They are made in advance and are stored in vesicles. they leave cells by diffusion or exocytosis, have a short life span, travel in the blood stream and some are able to cross the cell membrane, like thyroxine.

can someone define rational drug design?
A drug is designed to act specifically on a infective agent/enzyme. This then binds and removes the capacity to cause disease or the analysis of a disease to determine its structure. A drug is designed to inhibit the action of the disease causing agent, or a drug is man made to prevent the action of a particular infective agent and hence prevents the development of the particular disease.

rational = you know what you're targeting and why it will stop disease
empirical = you have no idea, but you know it works

It's good to know about the different nervous systems.
