GAT: Questions
« on: June 15, 2011, 07:00:20 pm »
Hi

I have a few questions about the upcoming GAT..

Writing Task 1 - Is this basically where we are informing people? like writing an expository piece?
Writing Task 2 - Is this basiicaly like writing a persuasive essay? and are we allowed to use language techniques + facts/stats/evidence off the top of our heads to support our Point of View? & Is it okay for us to disagree or agree with the statement(s) that we choose?

Thanks. =D

With 30 minutes (as recommended) to write each you might not have enough time to do a full analysis.

For the 2nd Essay, I"m intending to put my name into it, and use it as the basis of my argument, in a form of evidence, through some metaphorical crapping around to illustrate how awesome I am.
About Philosophy

When I see a youth thus engaged,—the study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle

The first can be factual or narrative as long as there's no opinion. The second is an opinion piece, so go for it!
This year is the first time I'm taking the GAT so I'm not completely sure.
I asked around though, and someone told me that if you have information for either writing task that isn't provided, you are allowed to use it.

Good luck!

Wait, so for the second part you can go against it if you want? Or perhaps even say yes I agree with some parts and no I don't with others?

another thing is.. with the Task 2.. where they give a statement.. can you use that statement in he writing piece or do we just start writing about our POV?

Either or, I think. You can either use the prompt as the basis or you can formulate your opinion on the issue presented in the statements and write about that.

How many words do you guys recommend for each task? I mean, it's only 30 minutes so would 400-500 words be sufficient?
