Yeah i had this as well, when i was doing this question i thought this is worth 3 marks??.... There must be some sort of trick :/ I remember in the unit 3 bio exam there was a very similar question where yuo had to list the components of a nucleotide and it was worth 1 mark.

I wrote phosphorous with a few oxygen atoms on the outside. How about that?

If that's literally what you wrote, that's probably a bit too casual for an answer

I didn't.

It's more descriptive than 'Phosphate' though to be honest.

Heard from a friend who's tutor is an examiner that the correct answer to use was 'phosphoric acid', my friend put phosphate and apparantly that was wrong.. so im guessing variations of that may be wrong too. Gg? Sigh, put phosphate group

That will be so annoying if they're not going to give phosphate group. Not many people would have thought to put phosphoric acid though...

^^^That's pretty dodgy, and I don't really agree (to tea.towel's post).

If they were looking for the reactants to actually produce a nucleotide, i think 'phosphate group' should suffice. :( The wikipedia article on nucleotides (not that that is reputable, but it does stand as a mark of general knowledge for a yr12 student), only mentions 'phosphate groups'. :(

That's tight as lol... I've only ever heard of it as a phosphate group... :(

It's acid because the it donates the H+ on it.
also the reason for it being called deoxyribose nucleic acid.
anyway, there goes any chances of an A+ lol..

edit: also, i think i wrote nitrogenous base instead of adenine or w/e it was.. fml
10 marks dropped, bye bye A+

The phophoric acid has nothing to do with it, it is the phosphate group that makes it an acid

Only accepting phosphoric acid would be particularly strict, but not indefensibly so

I've heard from my sources that the markers have been told to mark the Chem exam as strict as possible because it was easier this year, they have to seperate us somehow. It's just bad luck for us, as I've said before, we don't want easy exams.

Yeah i agree, very dodgy. I have only ever learnt it was phosphate group. Never knew phosphoric acid gave the phophate group
