Is ion-dipole bonding stronger than ionic bonds?

The context of the question is in reference to solubility.

So NaCl ---> Na+ + Cl- forming ion-dipole bonds which is stronger than the ionic bond hence it dissolved? :S

So why does NaCl dissolve?

I thought the H2O molecules form ion-dip attractions with the Na+ and Cl- which 'pull it' apart making ion-dip stronger? ???

the atoms disasociate because each ion forms more than one ion-dipole bond in water and end up surrounded by about 4 (i think someone check this) water molecules, forming the ion-dipole bonds. yes ionic bonds are stronger but the combined forces of the number of ion-dipoles bonds formed pulls the lattice apart and lets it dissolve

per bond I would say no, overall I would say yes.

Is this an acceptable explanation of why NaCl dissolves?

NaCl is an ionic compound that dissolves in water by dissociation which is the separation of the Na+ and Cl- ions as the substance dissolves. This occurs because the ion-dipole attractions formed between the ions and water are overall stronger than the ionic bonding that was holding the lattice together.
