Just to let everyone know that the UMAT lecture was not cancelled without detailed consideration. I was away at the time and I can assure you I would have rather had a peaceful holiday without numerous phone calls and much lost sleep over a UMAT lecture.
We have been forbidden from running UMAT lectures in the future and a great deal of pressure was placed on us not to run a UMAT lecture this year. I can assure you that we did not take the decision lightly, and we are very disappointed and apologetic for our decision.
I hope to see lots of people at the free chemistry lecture I'm running tomorrow. It's the best we could do!
Just back from spending the year at Oxford. Now onto final year Monash MBBS.

Without sounding stupid...

How can a University, control what a group of individuals do and don't do? It is disgraceful considering how much effort was put into the preparation for the lecture.

If they had their way they would probably try to block MedEntry as well (you'd hope). But I think it is moreso the fact that these fellas are Monash student =\

I agree with your sentiments though Deadshot.

Still total bull shit though.  I am pretty sure MedEntry has Monash people working for them, not to mention the many Monash students who tutor privately.

I feel really bad that CE has been targeted because it is completely ridiculous.

The person(s) who ratted out this lecture to Monash is/are scum.

Maybe you can meet lex or someone else at UniMelb, Monash or in the city?

Best to ask if they are willing to do this.

Exactly my point, agree with you fully.

If the UMAT is an independent test that IS NOT run by monash, how is CE any worse than medentry...

Yeah I'm not defending them for their actions.

Should probably keep this thread focused on what Connect has to offer, which is good affordable lectures.

aaand a free chem lecture :P

@rohitpi:
Hello! I'm the author of those methods notes. You said that the given solution to 2x^2-4>0, which was -root(2)>x>root(2) was incorrect. If you split up the inequality, looking at the first half only, it reads: -root(2)>x, that is: x is an element of (-infinity, -root2]. The second component, x>root(2) is the interval: [root2, infinity). When you put the two intervals together, the inequality is equivalent to the interval (-infinity, -root2]U[root2, infinity).

If we have a look at your proposed alternative, -root2<x<root2, it reads:
x is greater than -root2 and x is less than root 2. That is the interval [-root2, root2]. In short, I think you're incorrect, but thanks for raising it anyway!

@luken93:
The UMAT is run by ACER. ACER is a consortium, whose head works at Monash. I believe that's where the tie comes from.

Yes, you are welcome to come down to our lectures and pick them up over the next two days. Otherwise, please PM me to work out something specific - bank transfer, cheque or money order is a possibility.

Haha, I get you wording now, its a bit confusing though. I didn't propose , I was sticking to , just thought it was a bit confusing how that also equaled to (I don't think that's common methods notation, as it reads which doesn't make sense, or as we've been taught at methods level anyway).

Looks like we're on the same page though :)

So for the English lecture tomorrow :excited:

Catch a train to Melbourne central and then hop in a tram heading to the University of Melbourne?

It seems like the best way to go.

Hello :)

Yep, that's exactly the best way. And here are some further details:

To reach St. Mary's College/Newman College:

The best method of entry is via Newman College, 887 Swanston Street Parkville. The college is just north of Tin Alley (away from the tram line). If you take a tram up Swanston Street, get off just before it makes a right turn. The college will be to your left and you should continue walking along Swanston Street for approximately 100 metres.

You should buzz at the Newman College intercom and may ask the receptionist for directions. From here you can walk through and around to the Academic Centre. The door of this building will be open.
The English lecture is being held in the Jabiru Choral Room at the Academic Centre. If you get lost, ask the reception staff, or contact us directly on 0422 450 166.

There is a map attached showing you the route. Look out for the orange and white posters that will be pointing you in the right direction.

All of our lectures have went really well, English will make it an awesome finnish :)
