Dad - a policy maker or writer, something tangible and professional involving writing things.

Mum - whatever I want to do. She thinks I am particularly well-suited to academia or work in a museum or library.

On the discussion of high ATAR and MBBS,

Just because someone has a high ATAR doesn't mean this person is the smartest (not to say that the two are exclusive). At best, a 99.95 can only prove the person is the most diligent. We all know that ATAR doesn't work well as an 'intelligence rank' at the top end.

What my Dad wants me to do is to go my own course, and work for myself rather than others. He also wants me to study biomed instead of engineering, as he didn't have the english requirement so he chose to do electrical engineering. It bored the hell out of him and he says it doesn't pay well either, so I'll probably skip on engineering.

My Mum lets me do whatever, as long as I'm happy

They gave up on me being a doctor because I suck at maths.

Doctors aren't exactly mathematicians (neither am I). just imagine if the person who solved the Riemann hypothesis was a GP?

My parents would like me to become a professor, but I doubt that I have the ability to reach that position. I personally would love to become a professor because I would be able to lecture about what I love and would be able to constantly learn new stuff all the time.

Ok becoming a professor and becoming a teacher are two VERY different professions. I personally never want to become a teacher because you are restricted to the content you can learn and the students. I don't want my career to be about babysitting kids while trying to teach. I remember in a calculus 2 lecture when the professor was trying to lecture and there were students chatting, he basically told them to listen or to go out to the south lawn.
