Transferring into Medicine from a Biomed degree.
« on: July 06, 2011, 10:53:15 am »

EXAMPLES:

Let's say I complete a biomed course that takes 3 years and I transfer into medicine, would that shave 3 years off the med bachelor or would I have to start med from the start and do the full 6 years?

The same question with a bach of science.

And does it vary if you get low\high scores in the biomed\science bach?

thanks :)

Undergrad Med = 5 years
Biomed = 3 Years
Science = 3 years
Postgrad Med = 4 years

So if you head down the Biomed OR science path to gain entry, you are going to do a total of 7 years, as opposed to the 5 year UG med path.

As for your question in your sig, take a look at this, remembering that the aggregate is calculated from:
English
3 Best Subjects
10% of 5th and 6th subject.

What would you recommend?

Try my best to get into Medicine bachelor, Bachelor of surgery or do biomed first to have 2 degrees on my hand?

Depends how set you are on Medicine - if you're really keen, it's a hell of a lot better to get straight in rather than TRYING to get in after Biomed, as there's no guarantee you'll get in.

If you're undecided though, Biomed is designed to allow you to find which areas you enjoy and go from there.

yeah, I'm not that keen. :|

so probly just a bach of science and skip the biomed.

Dont do biomed, do science. Easier to get higher grades if your going to transfer after one year.

I don't fully agree with this. Subjects are easier if you find them more interesting. I definitely would have got a lower score in the science degree's bio since I'd have had to study plants.

In all honesty the plant aspects of the course were very simple, besides it was kept to a minimum in the exam

Yes, if you do an undergraduate degree then (except for certain, select courses) you start the post graduate degree without any special consideration or study pathways.

On the biomed/science discussion, there are benefits exclusive to science and benefits exclusive to biomedicine

How set are you on a biomedical pathway?

If you're not sure about doing med, I would go for the bachelor degree in science or biomed.  It gives you a lot of chance to build skills in general biomedical science, opening up pathways into medical research (before or after you do a medical degree - you can always go back!) and building a lot of good foundations which you don't get going straight into an MBBS.  If you're set on some sort of biomedical field (but are not sure which health science profession/medical research), I would be tempted to recommend Biomed to you.  I personally have found the standards of teaching in our course to be very high, and I personally find the large amount of diversity to be a plus.

But if you're set on medicine (most likely in the clinical sense), I would go for an MBBS course - considering interstate as well as Monash.  As others have indicated, you need to back yourself pretty heavily to get a decent GPA, GAMSAT and then interview - ENTER isn't tooo great an indicator of how you will go in these areas.  I know people with quite good ENTERs who don't do so well at uni and are worried about their potential to get into med atm (and of course the other way round too).  It's worth noting that the ENTER to get into biomed in the first place is pretty high (and a lot of these people are competing for med)!

That was amazing. (understatement)

Thank you so much for this information.
What are you doing @ uni at the moment? By looking at your signature I see you have incredibley high study scores. You must have gotten 99.90+??

Thanks again, I'll probably do biomed first then a graduate MBBS (or just become a science teacher. :D)

Is it possible for me to do ONE year of biomed then transfer into MBBS?

Don't think so. As soon as you start your tertiary studies, you cannot do MBBS.

That's not strictly true, some unis will accept transfers into their medical program. Monash, however, don't so you'll have to look interstate.
