IDFs getting abolished?? + other q's

Totez got into Melbourne, hooray!

I have a few questions of course :P

1. Someone mentioned they thought IDFs were getting abolished next year, does that mean I won't have to do one at all? I should be able to get credit for 'Globalisation' but it says in the handbook for arts that I have to take one in my first semester of enrollment. Really don't want to, they all look so bad lol.

1a. Which semester 2 IDF should I do? I can't do Globalisation. https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2011/!B-ARTS-SPC%2B1000 Any advice would be great. I'm leaning towards Understanding Asia or Self and Other.

2. I want to do biology as my breadth. I haven't done science since year 12. Will I be disadvantaged at all if I do Genes semester 2 without having done Cells and organisms semester 1 first? Also what is the course load like, can anyone give me any details about it?

3. Is Academic Advice Day worth it? I'm not sure if I want to attend, predominantly because timetabling starts at 10am on the same day and i don't want to miss it and get a bad timetable.

Thanks guys, I'm super excited :D No more Monash, wooooooo!

First off, congratulations! :D

1) Sorry, not too sure about that. I guess only the university itself can give you an answer to your question.

2) I did Democracy and Politics, Philosophy and Economics for my 2 IDF subjects. I did them both in semester 1. Many people find Democracy to be an uneventful subject and for PPE(Politics, Philosophy and Economics), most find the many concepts to be confusing, especially the economical ones. I would recommend PPE if you are interested in philosophical economists like Amartya Sen and Nozick, famous political works by Mill on liberty as such. Essentially, the course is all about political and philosophical considerations on state interventions and redistribution, on the grounds of the economy of course. For Understanding Asia, I have heard that it is quite a fun subject, but there is a lot of homework to do. Apparently, you have to constantly update your blog or something online. But if you are genuinely interested with it, then don't let the workload put you off. Sorry, I am not too sure about Self and Other.

3) I think you might be slightly disadvantaged. But I think for level 1 breadth subjects, the lecturers/tutors will most likely carry you guys, that's what i find, and most of them are quite approachable when you need extra help.

4) Academic Advice Day in my opinion, isn't that great unless you are desperate for free goodies and stuff. Its good f you want to meet new people and as such, but it kinda gets awkward because from my experience, the organisers didn't plan the events/activities quite well and it gets kinda weird...lol

Good Luck

Sorry, I completely destroyed the numbering of your questions :/

Biology isn't a breadth subject, it's a science subject that can be taken as breadth so the lecturers are going to be assuming that you've done 1st semester. I personally would have a backup subject chosen, so you can drop out and into another one if you're finding it too hard

Yes, biology is a science subject I was considering doing as my breadth subject~

I wouldn't expect to treat it like a breadth, I'm actually really interested in the subject content and I'd be working hard in it. It said there aren't any prereqs for the gene subject so I wasn't sure if you could take either of them stand alone or if it was expected that I did semester 1 first. In any case, I think I might wait until semester 1 to do bio because I'm more interested in that unit's subject content. Probably a waste to do it as a breadth anyway :\ Should do something with less hours. Which leaves me thinking I have noooo idea what to do as a breadth this semester!

Do you like commerce related subjects?  If so, I'd recommend Finance 1*.

Not at all sorry haha :P I think I've decided on: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/2011/MULT10013

Looks really interesting and my friend is doing it so that eliminates some of the awkwardness of forming groups :)

Nope, and I went to the info session about IDFs today as well. No news about the name change then either.

I was in the Political/Social Theory briefing and then the lecturer paused to check with her colleagues and said that they were to be called Arts Foundation subjects next year.

If it's just a name change, then what's that going to do?  Just a re-marketing strategy?
