What are the prerequisites to get into medicine? Which VCE subjects are needed?

Hi Huygen, welcome to VCEnotes.

The prerequisites for med are Chemistry and English (one of ESL, English, English Language or Literature), however if you are seriously considering medicine, I'd advise you to undertake maths methods and biology if you can (although they are not required but are useful for the course.)

More info here:
http://www.med.monash.edu.au/medical/

Monash is the only uni which still offers undergraduate (a course which you do without having to do another course - one which you apply to in year 12 essentially). Melbourne University used to, however now doesn't due to the introduction of the Melbourne Model.

It is the elimination of many, many undergrad courses, to be replaced by six new (well, not necessarily new, but labelled as "new generation") degrees

There's more to say...but I have to go eat dinner now. Sorry.

Melbourne Uni has extensive information available for people who are perplexed by the concept

Except they'll be biased and make it seem better than it really is, of course.

It is up to the user to decide what is biased opinion and what is 'fact' regarding the new model.

Doesn't the Melbourne model actually provide more options in the long term since you get do direct your path to what you want to achieve without actually transferring courses and going through all these processes?

yes, it's called postgraduate courses.

so basically you come out with a higher qualification with +2 year to your degree (assuming 3 years). If you choose to not do that (in which case your degree is still 3 years), you come out qualified for nothing :)

You don't really need to do methods at all

Biology is a massive help though

slightly. it just means you can go on to do a Ph.D. next.
an Hon. in any new. gen. degree still doesn't qualify you for anything though xD

Doesn't it go like: Bachelors --> Masters --> PhD? Can you do a PhD without a Masters?

yes you can go to do Ph.D. without masters: via Hon.

year 12 ==> Bch (Hon) ==> Ph.D.
a fast-tracked way to get into research.

as for qualifying for stuff, the new generation bachelor degrees in the new melbourne model doesn't professionally qualify you for anything at all, even if you do honours. that's the reason for all the graduate schools.
but the same thing goes for any other universities. Bachelor of science and bachelor of arts are known to qualify for nothing professionally.
