I'm considering going to ANU next year.

The idea of living so far from home is kinda scary though.

meh, you'd be surprised how little of a deal it is (especially when you're staying at a college = surrounded by friends 24/7). i really don't get homesick all that often.

Hi I am thinking possibly of going to ANU next year
at the moment I am thinking, arts, PhB (Hons) -arts, or arts/law

What does the PhB (hons) arts actually involve? How many students are usually chosen for the program? Is it primarily directed at people who wish to become academics? What is arts at anu like?

How are the general facilities of the university?

In terms of colleges which ones are the better ones and for what reasons? Are there any that you would completely avoid?

I know ANU has a brilliant reputation, so I am sure its programs are fantastic, however I need to convince myself that I actually want to go there. I am therefore open to persuasion.

Thankyou

I don't think I'd miss my family that much lol.
It's more I've never been to Canberra and know no one there.
I wouldn't know my way round or anything.
Plus I'd have to go make all new friends and I'm not the most outgoing person.

That makes me feel much better. At last count I have 6 bags and 2 suitcases and I'm also going to take my computer.
And yep, I'm driving with my mum and brother, and we're planning to spend tomorrow night in Aubury.

There's lots of information here:http://arts.anu.edu.au/programs/ug/PhB/index.asp
As far as I've been able to muster, it's like an arts degree except it's more advanced and research based. It sounds like fun to me, so hopefully it will be!

I think it was something like 20 people chosen a year, 10 straight from high school.

And yeah, it is aimed towards those who want to do academia (which is what I'm hoping to do) but I'm sure it would be useful to just have the letters "PhB" after your name when applying to any job.

How are the general facilities of the university?
I don't know yet. I'll post pictures after I get there if you want.

In terms of colleges which ones are the better ones and for what reasons? Are there any that you would completely avoid?
Again, I can't really tell you, although life at each college would be similar, I imagine. The biggest choice, I think, is determining whether you'll go catered or self-catered. If you're catered, you don't have to worry about cooking meals, but some people want to cook for themselves.

I'm not the most outgoing person either, but it's a big uni, there's likely to be people there that have similar interests to you. I also don't know my way around Canberra, although I've been looking at bus timetables and google maps and it actually seems kind of foolproof now (although it'll probably be a different story once I'm there).

PhB arts means that you do normal arts courses, but also Advanced Studies Courses = research project thingies. plus you have to get an HD average. students are chosen primarily on academic merit - you usually need over 99 to get in, or to have achieved highly in some important competition or course or something. and yes, it's primarily directed at people who want to be academics, though of course it's useful otherwise as well - it's a very prestigious degree. and arts at ANU is pretty good. my sister does anthropology here, and my neighbour does PhB arts majoring in history and european studies. seems to be pretty decent.

How are the general facilities of the university?
erm... good, i guess. don't really know what facilities you're asking about, but in general ANU is pretty well set out for most things. it is the top university in australia, after all...

In terms of colleges which ones are the better ones and for what reasons? Are there any that you would completely avoid?
depends if you go to a catered or a self-catered college. for catered, i'd recommend bruce (where i go) or burgmann (where erin's going). the latter has a rep for being full of north shore snobs doing arts/law, but it's a good college. bruce is pretty awesome in my opinion. the other catered colleges are ursula hall and johns. johns is full of jocks, so i wouldn't recommend going there. ursies has the rep for being nerdy/a little weird. it's a lot quieter than other colleges.

for self-catered, there's b&g and unilodge. b&g is a real college, whereas unilodge is almost like a hotel. hard to describe. anyway, i'd much recommend b&g over unilodge. bear in mind that self-catered colleges are much less social/harder places to make friends than catered colleges.

Hehe, almost everyone I've met (apart from postgrads) are either doing something arts related or law related (or both), there are a few in commercey people too, but not many. But yeah, there are a heap of people from Sydney (especially North Shore) although I've met a fair few Melbournians as well.

It's easier to get into courses at ANU than at Melbourne, for example. The degrees are probably as prestigious as each other (maybe ANU is a little more prestigious?) but the entrance requirements are dramatically lower. For example, law (or combined law) requires a 95 ENTER.

Oh yeah, it is. But life changes when you go to uni anyway. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed and tired ATM, although I'm sure once I get a routine happening, I'll be fine.
