anyone do spesh? give me some advice if you can please on spesh and enhancement studies if you do them! thanx alot

I do Spesh... Can't say I'm the best at it, especially since I get D+'s in Methods :(... I'm really a humanities person. No idea why I chose it. But I can assure you, Spesh is easier than Methods. I average C's in it instead of the D+'s I average in Methods. To think some portray it as the 'harder' maths... I know which is harder for me; a mathematically depleted person. ;)

I think that as costargh said, look through a spesh text book. I'm currently going through complex number and it is easy with only a few hard questions. I know that their are going to be harder questions but  it seems to only take up almost the same amount of time as say methods would. If look through the text book and maybe do a few questions or even talk to people at your school doing spesh you could get a good grasp of whether it is for you or not.

Yeah, I do. I guess I am not someone like Ahmad or Neobeo haha. As long as you enjoy maths, Specialist will become interesting rather than difficult (it's actually become my favourite subject this year). I also do Methods 3/4 concurrently - it makes it a whole lot easier. I would imagine doing UMEP/MUEP maths would make any VCE level maths subjects seem dry in comparison.
I would love a 40+ raw for Spec, although realistically I will probably only get a 35-39 (which isn't too bad in my books :)).

I think if you can get 35+ in methods then 30+ in spesh shouldn't be much harder. One of the great things about doing spesh is it will be a fantastic supplement to methods... especially in calculus and trig.

lol really? thats really strange...

Specialist really isn't that hard. However, you need to put in alot of work to do well in it.

I'm doing Specialist and an extension study (biology) this year, after having completed 3/4 bio last year. I find spec more challenging than methods, but also more interesting. The topics we do are very different from ones covered in previous years, while methods has the usual graph drawing, some trig, calculus and probability. I am getting about the same marks for spec and methods, but I do tend to spend more time doing spec homework. However, the competition in specialist is alot tougher. It is mainly made up of 'talented mathematicians', whereas the methods cohort is alot more varied.
My extension study is fairly easy. I don't do much work for it and still achieved a decent mid-semester mark. Between the two, I would say that specialist takes up more time. Think about the type of work you prefer, maths is pretty systematic (just practicing lots of questions) compared to your other subject choice.
I would follow your teachers' advice and enrol in both subjects, then keep the one that you enjoy the most. That was my plan but I decided to keep both!
Good Luck!

make sure that you meet the preparatory studies before you even think about the enhancement subjects!

also as mentioned they're not that hard on your grades... maybe monash uni is more lenient but my friend got like a lil bit above pass for methods (one bad subject) but she got accepted as well for enhancement.

i also did year 12 chem and uni accounting at the start of the year to sorta decide i guess whether i want to drop chem or not. it seemed too much work for me =P anyway most uni subjects start only about 2-4 weeks into term 1 so yeah you can just sit in the spesh class at that period of time and see how you find it. i think you should probably check though that you can get a refund if you withdraw your enrolment for enhancement.

i heard enhancement subjects were free of charge? other than some fees for facilities or somewhat?
and yes i do meet the requirements, since it goes all you need is to have done year 11 humanities and science subjects and continuing that into year 12. legal is a humanities subject, true?

Melbourne Uni extension studies are free in 2009. The only cost which may be incurred is for school facilities, and that will vary from place to place.

With Monash there are a few fees
