What are the stereotypes for each catered residence? Eg I heard something about John’s being full of rugby lovers.
What residence do most law students go to?

Hey whats ANU like?
I'm considering going there.
It's nice.

?
A more detailed question would be useful...
Oh my bad.
Okay.
Whats the atmosphere like?
At colleges or in classes or what? Atmosphere is kinda hard to describe. Anyway, at college everyone's pretty incredibly social. People work out their own balance needed between study and social life andact accordingly. As for classes - well, ANU is the highest ranked uni in Australia for a reason. Courses are as difficult as UMelb and mostly harder than Monash. The students are from all over the country, and plenty live at colleges. So you do have a much more well-rounded air than the predominantly upper-middle class private school kids that dominate UMelb.

Burgmann has the rep of being full of snobby North Shore (Sydney equivalent of Toorak, I suppose) Arts/Law students who weren't quite smart enough to get into Law at USyd. Well, Burgmann does really have a lot of Law students, though the snobbiness bit doesn't hold true for the most part. Bruce has a lot of Law students too, I've found. Johns is well, full of jocks. Don't go there. Ursies is a bit quiet and kinda nerdy. I suppose if you're into that then it's okay...

hmm so burgmann and bruce seem to be the go.. how much do you lot miss your melbourne friends? iv already been away for a year and i cant imagine another FIVE years without my school friends.

is it really social? like what do you do in an average day, an average weekend etc?

ta

eta. also youth allowance, do u get the living away from home rate if ur living in residence at uni? what about rent assistance? pretty sure i should qualify as independent after this year

I'm pretty sure you do get the living away from home rate for youth allowance, but you'd have to double-check.

Is is really quite social. On an average day I'll spend the morning either working or going to class, have lunch at college and talk to people, spend the afternoon either working or going to class again, have dinner, spend the rest of the evening watching a movie/TV shows or going out. I've been walking less into civic at night because it's so cold, but now that it's Spring again it'll be good. On a weekend I work all day, have dinner and fall asleep during a movie. Thursday nights are for going out if you're into that.

The food is meh. Some days are better than others. I have gained a little weight (I think about 5kg over the year) but that's also partly because I've recently had a bad tendency to snack on things during the day and as I mentioned earlier, I haven't really walked as much because of the cold. I think that having at least 2 hot meals a day is offset by all the walking you have to do if you go here (it takes me about 10 minutes to walk to Manning Clark from Burgmann and if you do that, there and back, twice a day, that's 40 minutes of walking; then walking into civic takes about 20 minutes, so there and back is another 40 minutes, which I might do a couple times a week).

Since when does high ENTER (or UAI...) = smartness?

Just because someone doesn't finish in the top 0.5% of the state, doesn't mean they're any less smart than someone who did.

Food is... meh. It depends. For the first year I didn't mind it much, this year I'm getting pretty bored of it - I'd like to be able to cook for myself next year.

Melbourne friends - well, I visit a couple of times a year. But you make new friends so quickly. I'm much closer to my college friends than my school friends.

Socialness depends on the person. I'm usually up til 1-2 in the morning with my friends - watching movies, playing Wii, drinking etc. There's always an opportunity to socialise...

Not sure with the exact details of youth allowance, but if you can qualify as independent then you'll be able to claim some lovely moneys.

Well considering most unis bank on the fact that ENTER is proportional to intelligence... anyway, you get what I mean.

At Bruce there are a couple of kitchens that you can book if you want to cook for yourself. People don't do that too regularly though.

Next year I'm hoping to move into the self-catered wing of Bruce.

Why don't people (ie people at ANU's other colleges) like Johns?
It has a reputation for being Jocks - I understand that much.
Any other reasons?

I've had friends there who really haven't liked it. Apparently it's much more segregated than other colleges in that at mealtimes people sit at tables only with their friends, and if someone who isn't their friend comes and joins them then they ignore them completely. Kinda juvenile, really.

question:
for anyone currently in ANU, before your first year, did you have doubts about moving after being initially excited at the prospect of moving out?
2 weeks ago i couldn't wait, but now im thinking, it'd be better staying at home lol.

^ Yeah, as far as I know that's pretty normal, or at least, that's how I felt.
