Hello,
At this present time I'm considering two different degrees, either one in Commerce or Finance and Melbourne and ANU are on my list. My understanding is that ANU is higher ranked than Melbourne, hence it's more appealing. Alongside that the ENTER scores are quite a lot lower... 75 as opposed to 95 for Commerce - is this primarily due to demand? I assume since it's in Canberra there's a lot less demand.
I'm kind of at a point where I'm not sure where to go and what the advantages/disadvantages are for both of these universities. I essentially want to go to the better of the two, accommodation isn't really an issue.
Can anyone really comment on whether or not it's worth going to ANU in this scenario, or in general - Melbourne VS ANU for these two specific courses.
Thanks in advance.
Oh yeah, are there apartments close to the university? Or is boarding down there a necessity.
No idea what the advantages/disadvantages of the two universities are in terms of Commerce and Finance degrees. You don't have to get 25 in methods to get into Commerce at ANU, maybe. The low ENTER scores are precisely due to the fact that demand isn't great because few people want to move to Canberra, for some strange reason.
General advantages about ANU? It's a great uni, incredible atmosphere, you meet people from all over Australia and the world. But bear in mind that ANU's high ranking is heavily due to the fact that it's a great research university - as far as undergraduate degrees go, ANU is definitely in the top few unis in Australia, but it isn't incredibly better than say UMelb or USyd or something. Don't be fooled by ANU's ranking: it is a great university, but it's not worth going to over UMelb purely on the basis of its high ranking. I'm sure a Commerce degree at UMelb is worth just as much as one from ANU. That being said, I love ANU and couldn't imagine studying at another Australian university - I wouldn't learn nearly as much, have such a great time, and be as highly qualified when I left at other universities.
As for accommodation, nearly all interstate students stay at a college on campus (at least in their first year - many move out in 2nd/3rd/4th year). Otherwise accommodation can be extremely hard to come by (Canberra has a general accommodation shortage) and is quite expensive for inner city places. But college is awesome, so it's all fine...
