mathematics is not that scary...

first year calculus is very achievable in middle-school if the student has the passion, and the aptitude to handle symbolic manipulations, and all that comes from a solid primary education.

get a chair, throw it at him and tell him to work his ass off because in life, nothing is ever easy.

if that doesn't work, find an opportunity when he has his back turned to you and then run up and jump kick him in the back. hopefully the pain he feels will shake off all that slack.

you might also like to check out a book that i wrote about teens who slack.

it's called 'listen you fucking moron, life is hard and you better start working for it because you are going to fail if you slack. WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT'

Yeah, years nine and ten mathematics was such a waste of time. I think the idea of solid foundations are taken too seriously. Things like calculus are not difficult, as soon as you learn gradients and polynomials the first time you can get calculus. They just hold it back from you.
