"Nationalism is an insult to reason. It doesn't benefit people in any way. It merely serves as an excuse for committing the most outrageous abuses."

Nationalism is evil.
It results in things like the Iraq war.

I did an essay on this recently using the Vietnam War. I said that it is a powerful, but neutral force. What should be of interest is who is using it and to what end. (e.g. I argued that the protest movement was motivated very much by nationalistic rhetoric).

You didn't need to invoke Godwin's law so early.

Nationalism is like a gun, and guns don't kill people; people kill people.

In other words, it depends on who is in control, and what end(s) they hope to achieve.

Way too early for Godwin's Law!

you could juxtapose Hitler with a depiction of Germany's ultra-civilised society of the late 19th century

The very fact that the appeal to nationalism is effective troubles me. It depends who is wielding the appeal to nationalism, but eventually, someone will wield nationalism for bad.

Good decisions are made from reason, not bigotry.
