What about accounting and economics?

I don't think finance is high demand, hence there is more competition for a job in finance. So yes, there *may* be a risk of being unemployed or employed but with a low salary. But yes, high return if you suceed :)

There is a high demand in accounting, so it would be the safest option out of the three. Salary starts of low-ish to average, but if you get further qualifications, such as CA, salary will increase.

I dont know much about economics, ask Collin :P

Hahaha, I guess you could say that! Using finance theory to describe how higher return is required for higher risk (although, it's really just economic theory at the roots of this). ;)

btw. Today has been a very sad day in the equities market. But oh well. :(

There is never a sad day for economists, because this, in my eyes, is just self-correction of the markets. All of this malinvestment spurred by the central banks is finally coming back to crunch us in the arse, and it's going to hurt. The costly correction period of recessions, or maybe even a depression, is upon us. It means in the long-run we will have a more efficient marketplace. The bad firms get rooted out in these times.

Whats more in demand, whats easier to get a career in... economics, finance or accounting

Accounting is probably in the highest demand, but watch out, some economists are pushing to have the tax code simplified, and your jobs would get easier (hence possibly redundant or more competitive). :P

The highest paid are indeed in the Finance industry. To be specific, the Investment Banking Division. As far as I know, on average, Melbourne IBing graduates obtain $70,000. However, I have a friend who works at Citi, in the IBD and is compensated $85,000 - $90,000. :)\

And oh btw, it isn't all the Central banks fault. It was mainly caused by the poor decision making of banks for investing vast amounts of assets in subprime mortgages and heavily risky contracts/securities (such as Credit def. swaps) that caused this plunge.

An influx of credit from the central bank doesn't make banks want to do that?

If you have been reading the news, now is not a good time for finance grads.
