Common Errors in the Exams

Just thought it would be interesting to get everyone to put together a list of common errors and mistakes that people make in the exams.

I'll start:

*Leaving out and when integrating.

*When solving logs, not checking your solutions to see if they fit into the appropriate domain.

Hebrew - 33 (scaled 44)   |   Maths Methods - 45 (scaled 48)

2009
Specialist Maths   |   Chemistry   |   English   |   Biology   |   Further Maths

* When squaring both sides, not checking your solutions to see if they fit into the appropriate domain.

 • Composite functions - not checking whether they are defined or not.
 • Expanding - e.g.     wrong:    correct:
 • Finding the equation of a tangent/normal - using the wrong gradient, finding the tangent and not the normal and vice versa, finding the gradient but forgetting to find the actual equation using .
 • Undifferentiable parts of a function - endpoints, cusps (i.e. the pointy bit of the "V" absolute graph)... etc
 • Mixing up rules - product rule, quotient rule, chain rule ...

Stupid graphing errors:
-using the wrong circle (open/closed)
-not showing an asymptote if there is one
-intercepts.... bleh

maybe its just me who makes these errors :P

Multiple choice: If I don't get an answer correct, start from scratch again.  Currently, I get fixated on a question for 10 minutes, refusing to believe my answer is wrong, and theirs must be.

Haha

Let's see what I've stuffed up so far

- Not remembering , is always always positive.
- Cubing a negative number and getting the bloody sign wrong
- Differentiating cos(x) and forgetting the bloody minus sign.
- Rounding to to many/to few decimal places.
- Putting the range of a function instead of the domain.
- Putting the domain/range of the wrong bloody function.
   > Drawing the graph of the wrong function.
- Drawing the graph/stating domain-range of an inverse function and forgetting the restriction on the original function.
- Integrating when I am supposed to differentiate
- Numerator in square root CAN be zero, demoninator CAN'T be zero.
- Dilating from wrong axis.
- Ignoring the domain of a probability density function when sketching a graph.
- Finding the wrong area bounded by a graph and axes.
